It's difficult to believe that this third 'Indy' adventure is now over 19 years old but worth watching again to see the great chemistry between Ford & Connery. Rumours persisted of a 4th adventure and a new movie finally appeared this year alas without Connery. Directed again by Steven Spielberg with style and panache, this movie has Indiana chasing after the Holy Grail following in the footsteps of his father played by Connery ( not sure about the age gap ). Cries from Indy of "Don't call me Junior !" are funny especially as Spielberg introduces us to the Young Indy played by River Phoenix in the opening titles. His anxious post chase attention seeking meeting with his father sets up the father/son relationship.
Like the first adventure Indy has to battle again with the Nazis comically aided by Denholm Elliot as Marcus Brody who goes along for the ride and John TLD & Lord Of The Rings Rhys-Davies as Sallah who returns after Raiders. The glamour is provided by Alison AVTAK Doody as Dr. Elsa Schneider whom both Jones meet up and bed in Venice. The villain of the film is played with clipped American accent by Julian FYEO Glover as businessman Walter Donovan who seeks the Grail for eternal life.
When Indy reaches the Grail, he meets an old knight who reminds me of 007's Q - Desmond Llewelyn - I was expecting him to say "Now pay attention ... ". With a memorable cast, stunts ( great boat & bike chases ) and Spielberg at his entertaining best - a must for the collection. |
