THE HISTORY OF 1001 (MONKLANDS SQUADRON)

The Squadron was formed on the 21st February 1941, and named “Baillieston and District Squadron”. It occupied a hut, loaned by the Scottish Gliding Club, and was situated in front of Baillieston Junior Secondary School.
The Squadron moved to its present Headquarters in 1950, the property being purchased by the Air Ministry, for the Air Training Corps from the Drumpellier Golf Club. The premises were originally the Golf Club Pavilion and were in a very dilapidated condition when taken over. Squadron personnel carried out the work of renovating them for occupation at that time. When the Squadron took occupation of its new home the Squadron title was changed to “Monklands Squadron”. The ancient name of Monklands covers an area from Bishopbriggs to Stepps and from Mount Vernon to Airdrie and Caldercruix.
