Frequently asked questions

What is the ATC
The ATC or Air Cadets is a uniformed youth organisation under the guidance of the Royal Air Force. Formed in 1941 its main ambition was to train young men in all aspects of aviation, so that when they were old enough to join the RAF, it would take less time to train them for war duties. With few variations the aim of the ATC is basically the same today, but with more emphasis on adventure training as there is on flying and is now open to females as well. The joining age is 13 years.

What do you do?
Activities are varied and should appeal to most youngsters’ male or female. At Manningtree we teach First Aid, Orienteering, Canoeing, Campcraft, Rifle Shooting, Citizenship training, Radio Communications and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, as well as preparing you for Flying and Gliding lessons. We have a marching band, various field exercises, regular sports events and enjoy social activities like disco’s, fund raising, outings etc. In the ATC as a whole, opportunities exist for Mountain Training, Outward Bound Centres, Parachuting, Overseas Flights and Camps at RAF stations at home and abroad.

When do you meet?
Meeting nights are held on Monday and Wednesday nights from 7.00pm to approximately 9.30pm. All are welcome!

Who do I contact?
Please contact either of the following for further details: Flight Lieutenant (Commanding Officer): Janet Brown or Flying Officer (Training Officer): Nick Castle on 01206 392159.
