The Air Training
Corps is a National Organisation. It is a disciplined, uniformed
Youth Organisation
which is supported nationwide by the Royal Air Force (RAF).
The
Corps is always looking for new cadets, both male and female, between the
ages of
13 and 18. If you have an interest in aircraft and aviation subjects, and
can
spare two
evenings a week, then the ATC could be for you. You can join any time
after you
reach your 13th birthday. You will undergo some basic training for
about 3
months, which will include some history of the Air Training Corps and the
RAF,
first aid, navigation and care of uniform. You will then be provided with
a uniform and then y o u can fly in an RAF aircraft, shoot targets with
a rifle and attend annual camp on an RAF station and take part in sporting
activities. As you gain experience, you can earn the chance to help organise
some of the squadron activities and take on other responsibilities. At 14
years old, you can apply for a place on an Adventure Training Course in
the wild areas of Wales or the Lake District, or start working towards your
Duke of Edinburgh award or win your ATC Marksman badge. Or better still,
all of these!
At 15 years, you could be an RAF Marksman and at 16 you could fly solo in a glider and wear wings on your uniform so that everyone will know.
At 18, you could be given the chance of being selected for the highest cadet rank, Cadet Warrant Officer. Everything you do is recorded on your ATC National Record of Achievement which complements your school ROA and becomes part of it. There are chances of promotion if you work hard, and as an NCO you could be involved in exchanges with cadets from other countries or apply for a flying scholarship.
ADULT STAFF are always welcome: contact your nearest squadron for more information.
