Joining Cadets

You may join the Air Training Corps (ATC) when you reach your 13th Birthday although there is currently (May 2006) a pilot scheme in the London area to allow boys and girls to join when they start year 9 at school.

Most squadrons have vacancies for males and females, to find your nearest squadron, click here.

You can expect to join in a wide variety of activities: initially, you will have to do some basic training for about three months at which point you will be formally enrolled and be provided with your uniform. Uniform comes in three sizes, too big, too small and not available. Howver, parents will be expected to buy black shoes and black socks (boys) or barely black tights (girls).

Activities may include flying, gliding, weekend camps, Camps at RAF bases at home and overseas, computer work, marksmanship, orienteering, drill, formal parades, studying for exams, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme (from age 14)and a host of other things specific to individual squadrons. These pages will give some idea of the things that members of 1803 Squadron in Hucknall get up to.

The cost varies from squadron to squadron but currently (May 2006) it is £2.50 per week at Hucknall.

The Main thing is to learn whilst having fun!
