Restoration to an Ekco A22 radio 1946.

ART DECO RADIO ROUND EKCO

Model A22

VINTAGE BAKELITE CLASSIC By E K Cole Ltd. circa 1945 Perhaps one of the most sought after Art Deco classic icons from the 20th Century. Originating from Wells Coates award winning designs in the 1930's, this model A22 was the last and probably the cleanest EKCO design of all, with the 360 degree dial. This is the "Walnut" Bakelite version with the "Florentine bronze" loud speaker surround. 14 1/2" high x 13" wide x 7 1/2" deep. Condition: This set is in lovely condition. The Bakelite cabinet is an excellent example free from any damage or repair,

Asked to finish a part completed restoration by Mr G. Shaw. A great deal of fine work already completed. Including, chassis clean and repaint, assembly of many of the components. But leaving lots to do. Fitting the mains transformer, Renewing the smoothing capacitors in their original aluminium casings, making some of the missing parts. A complete set of valves required including EBL31. Not having one in stock, an equivalent valve, an EBL1 is utilized by removing the old side contact base, and fitting an octal base. This can be seen in the photo. A new mains lead with earth fitted. Some parts of the tuning indicator were missing necessitating a fabrication of some parts. The upper wheel and indicator arm and shadow box were all missing. With the use of a simple lathe, and making a tin plate shadow box, and many hours work, it has all gone together very well. Assembled and realigned the set gives superb reception on all wavebands. Fortunately the cabinet and back plate are in super condition. Miraculously the original loudspeaker cloth and the bronze effect trim are almost perfect. Unfortunately the original knobs have been lost, so a set of A23s have been acquired on ebay. these are similar style and colour but very slightly larger. They will do for the present until a correct set of knobs can be found.

See and Hear it working on UTube.

Photos below. Show the EBL1, now with its new octal base an EBL31

Below is the fabricated shadow box, and the dial drive wheel showing.

See below the almost perfect scale, loudspeaker cloth, and bronze effect trim.
