EMAIL: zerozerozeroone@wyan.org NAME: Michael Chelmecki TOPIC: Before & After COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD PSEUDO-RAYTRACING COMPETITION PSEUDO-COPYRIGHT. TITLE: 1st Cup of the Morning COUNTRY:United States WEBPAGE: Private RENDERER USED: POVray 3.6 TOOLS USED: IrfanView - convert to composite JPEG and gamma correct RENDER TIME: About thirteen hours for "Before", about an hour for "After". HARDWARE USED: AMD K6 IMAGE DESCRIPTION: One of my favorite aspects of ray tracing is that one gets to work with the nature and condition of "the observer", an important part of any composition, in a very direct way. In "1st Cup of the Morning", a small change in that which is depicted brings about a much larger change in the hypothetical observer. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: In a word, hastily. Having suggested the topic, I was bound and determined to get an entry in desipte changing jobs and moving while the time for the round was passing. As usual, everything is CSG from scratch. The only "outside" files used were the fonts 'Webdings"(the heart), "Arial Bold", and "Accord SF Heavy Bold". I didn't include the code this time because, to be bluntly honest, it represents REALLY bad coding practices. In order to get an entry in before the deadline, the objects I needed were created in a very ad hoc fashion with just enough detail to fulfill their function in this particular image. The "chair", for example, has no legs or seat as they would not be visible. About the only technique used that might be of interest to someone else for later use is the method of placing the design on the coffee cup. It consists of the intersection of "box" and "text" objects with the "Cup" object ever so slightly scaled upward along the x and z axes. For any brand new ray tracers who might read this, the "Before" half of the image uses "fog" and "focal blur" to simulate perceptual dysfunction brought on by caffeine deprivation. Clearly, this image will not be winning any technical merit awards, but I had fun making it and hope folks will enjoy it.
