About Roiy

Roly first appeared in our garden in June 1999 as a young fledgling. Obviously born nearby in the spring, his appearances were infrequent and it wasn't until Autumn that year that he started feeding on domestic food. He began by eating digestive biscuits crumbled up on the path near to where we were working in the garden. He would gladly eat the crumbs whilst hanging around us.

We assumed Roly was a male bird because of what we had read in several books. His name came from the weekly cartoon story of a Robin Family in Womens Weekly magazine available in Britain, which I remember my Mother reading to me as a child.

In late May 2000 he disappeared for 5 weeks. We thought that he had fled but he returned sporadically in early June and appeared breathless as if he was coming from far afield. We can only assume he was coming from his breeding territory where he was helping to bring up his young. In July 2000 he was back in our garden on a much more regular basis and appeared to be staying to roost close by or even in our garden.

His redeeming feature was a slightly deformed beak which wouldn't close properly:

Unfortunately Roly disappeared on the 4th January 2001 and we haven't seen him since. Other Robins have come and gone in our garden, but none have been as tame as our old "friend".
