Roly's Antics

Extraordinary as it may seem, but as time went on Roly became very tame. Robins do interact with humans very well and have been known to take food from the hand. However Roly was never quite as brave, but he did amuse us with some of his antics !

Getting our attention

Roly attracted our attention by flying onto a small conifer in a plant pot on the steps at the front of our "French Windows" and staring into our living room.

As soon as one of us got up and walked into the Kitchen to feed  him, he must have seen the movement through the window. At that point, he flew off the conifer and onto the trellis fence at the front of our backdoor, ready to jump down onto the steps to be fed. Roly would often perch upon the trellis and sing merrily, especially on a sunny morning.

On one occasion on a Saturday afternoon in the Spring, I was washing the car at the front of the garage and Roly came hopping beside me at my feet as I was crouched down washing the car wheels. I realised he wanted feeding, so I headed back to the house with Roly flying close behind like a pet bird !

As time went on, Roly became quite brave and entered our house many times ! In the summer of 2000, early evening, we went into the Kitchen to find him perched upon the door, he had obviously flown in through the open back door to find us. He must have become impatient waiting on the conifer at the front of the window (we were having tea so never noticed him).

If we placed the dish just inside our house, he would happily jump in from the back door step and tuck into his dinner !
