RIB fundraising update

News on fundraising for the RIB so far:

  • Scout Funds from previous fund raising (£1000) used to purchase RIB
  • RN Grant of £2500 received
  • Donations received from organisers of recent beach clean as they appreciated Scouts support - two cheques each of £100
  • One of our scouts (Beth) held a cake sale at school raising £48

Thanks to all who has helped so far.

With the RN grant in place we have ordered the new engine so we need to get busy fund raising (and still need a volunteer coordinator, names to Skip please!).

More info on a couple of our plans shortly.

Working Party this Sunday

Please help with Work Party on Sunday 13th May (even if you can only spare an hour or so any time would help) where we need to get the following done:

  • Rib tubes and rib cleaned down ready for engine fitting
  • Grass cutting
  • Boat and trailer check ahead of new season
  • Garage organising including shelf building
  • Altar fire refurbishment (we have 2 but need to get heights altered so if anyone can weld and has some kit that would assist)

Animal Bedding Appeal

At this evening's meeting Phil advised the Scouts that the Stubbington Ark Animal Sanctuary are in desperate need of bedding material for their animals this following an increase in the number of animals at the shelter and the recent extreme wet and cold weather. The shelter are seeking donations of old blankets, sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers and towels. Pillows and duvets are not suitable. We've set the scouts a challenge of creating a collection of the above that can be transferred to the sanctuary at the end of the month.

All donations to Troop Meetings, please, and gratefully received.

Your Group Needs You

We have recently been given the opportunity to take over the ownership of the Hampshire Rib which we have been looking after for a few years, however it needs a number of repairs including some extensive work on the controls and engine or get a replacement engine. The replacement engine option means we can reduce running costs, reduce repair costs and make it easier to use.

We have secured a RN Sea Scout Grant (£2500) which would meet nearly half the new engine costs, which is a brilliant start, but we need to raise the other half of the funds needed for the new engine and urgent work to the trailer and we need everyones help to support this so we can maintain and improve our water programme. We are also targeting a new pulling boat if we can raise additional funds though this will be a challenge.

Fundraising has already started as Beth has volunteered to do a cake sale so thanks to Beth and we are underway already

So please you too can also help with:-

  • Fundraising ideas
  • Help support and join in with fund raising
  • Let us know if you know of any grants or sponsorship opportunities

We are also considering perhaps a big fundraiser on May Bank Holiday weekend but your ideas and support would be welcome.

The 'From Tip to Ship' competition

The 'From Tip to Ship' competition has been inspired by HM the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Pageant on Sunday 3rd June when a flotilla of 1,000 boats will journey down the River Thames.

To enter, groups of between 2 and 6 young people are invited to make a model of a boat or ship using recycled materials - it doesn't need to float! The boats should be a maximum of 1 metre in any direction (that's length, breadth or height) - small is fine too. You will need to photograph your model and enter the main competition before the closing date of 1st May 2012.

The 6 winning models will form a special exhibition in the Discover Greenwich Centre at the old Royal Naval College throughout June. The overall winners will be taken on a magical 'nautical day out' in London and every single member of the 6 winning teams will be presented with an exclusive set of top quality art materials from the Cumbrian pencil company Derwent.

The judges are looking for some creative vision and imaginative use of materials for this competition. Don't forget that if you do make a model you must keep it safe - as it could be one of the winning entries to be displayed at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.

A copy of the competition rules and entry guidelines can be found at : http://www.startimagining.co.uk/node/40

On top of the national competition, we are throwing this out to you as a challenge, we will judge any model built during the Easter holiday break at our first meeting back on Friday 20th April or for any models build during the summer holiday on our first Friday back in the HQ in September.

So get your thinking caps on or you could try typing Cardboard Ships into Google to see what comes up - in addition to any prizes your efforts may well earn you the Model Makers Activity Badge.

Opportunities to get muddy...

The Troop have told of a couple of opportunities to get muddy, the first with Bear Grylls and a competition being run by Persil offering 70 mud-loving kids (plus one friend each) the chance to win the ultimate day's adventure of mud covered mayhem. The lucky winners will discover a range of action-packed activities throughout the day.

For your chance to win - get Mum/Dad to

  1. Buy any Persil product
  2. Text PERSIL, plus the last four digits of the barcode to 57782
  3. You're in the Draw!
  4. Don't forget to claim your free Bear Gryllis adventure book

In response to your text, Persil will send you a unique code, which you can use to order a Free Bear Grylls adventure book.

The second opportunity is that the Gosport Waterways Action Group have invited us to their next clean up weekend on Saturday 31st March. Meet at Trinity Church at 0930 moving on to the Esplanade rocks and then around the Ramparts and across car park by Haslar Marina to Walpole Park. Hopefully we can muster a good workforce - remember this is a good work opportunity for anyone who has yet to be awarded the Community Challenge as well as raising profile of scouts and 5th in particular. The group leader is a former Mayor of Gosport and the only one to attend our RN Inspection.

Good luck to anyone who enters the competition and hopefully we can get a good turnout for a bit of local mud-covered mayhem.
