Be Prepared

The Scout Section is for young people, usually aged between 10½ and 14 years. A young person can come in to the Troop at 10 and may stay until they are 15 years old. The Scout Troop is the third and final Section in the Scout Group.
Sea Scouting is a branch of Scouting, not a separate organisation. It is based on the same fundamental Scouting Aims & Methods. Sea Scouts follow the core balanced programme for their section but then add a nautical twist to the programme and activities. Many Troops and Explorer Units meet more than once a week in the summer period and the additional meetings are used to develop nautical skills and seamanship training. It is not training for the Navy or the Merchant Navy careers, although Sea Scout training can be very useful for young people who are so interested.
Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme. "Participation" rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenges Awards and Activity Badges. Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit and helps develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal attitudes.
Being outdoors is important and half the Programme is given over to taking part in both the traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking as well as the wide range of adventurous activities, anything from abseiling to yachting. Being a Sea Scout Troop we spend much of out time involved in nautical activities, many of which are supported by Hardway Sailing Club.

The international aspect gives Scouting a special appeal and many Scouts now travel abroad during their time in the Section. In 2007 40,000 Scouts from around the World attended the World Jamboree in the UK, and Scouts regularly participate in International camps and experiences both on home soil and abroad, each of them a unique experience in its own right. We encourage our Scouts to take part in these activities as much as possible.
Scouting is about being with friends, as part of a team, participating fully in the adventure and opportunities of life.
Amongst other activities we work towards the Scout activity and challenge badges and encourage the Scouts to try and earn their Chief Scout Gold Award before they leave Scouts to join Explorers.
Our Troop consists of up to 40 young people, who are grouped into different "Patrols" named after birds (Gannet, Osprey, Kingfisher and Peewit). Each "Patrol" has has a Patrol Leader and an Assistant Patrol Leader. Our adult leaders and helpers are called by name by the Scouts.
Badges
There are lots of badges for Scouts to earn and wear on their uniform. Click here for more information about the badges and what they mean.
Uniform Information
|
The Sea Scout uniform is a blue sea-jersey worn with the group necker. Within the Troop there are activity and challenge badges you can earn. These badges are sewn on to the jersey.
The image to the right of this text shows you where these badges should be sewn. Please click the image to enlarge.
The Scout leader will advise you when you will be required to obtain the uniform. Both the jumper and necker are available from the Gosport District Scout and Guide Shop, 30 Alver Road, Gosport.
We also wear a Group t-shirt for some activities, these are available locally. The Leaders will be able to give you more information on this item.
