Dunkirk On 20th May 1940 609 Squadron moved from Drem down to Northolt, and on 6th July moved to Middle Wallop. During the May to July period no less than eight pilots were killed in action. There is no doubt in the minds of the survivors that the lack of an experienced leader contributed greatly to the tragic loss of: F/Lt. Dudley 'Presser' Persse-Joynt 31st May 1940
F/Lt. Philip 'Pip' Barran 11th July 1940
F/O. Peter Drummond-Hay 9th July 1940
F/O. Desmond 'Dizzy' Ayre 30th May 1940
F/O. John 'Pinky' Gilbert 31st May 1940
F/O. Joseph Dawson 1st June 1940
F/O. Ian 'Hack' Russell, DFC 1st June 1940
P/O. James Buchanan 7th July 1940 |
