The names and details of all known groundcrew who kept 609 (West Riding) Squadrons aircraft up in the air where they belonged
1936 - 1945
In 1936, Yorkshires first squadron of weekend airmen formed at Yeadon Aerodrome (Now the Leeds / Bradford Airport). The wooden huts were fitted out with engineering equipment and tooling to enable the experienced Regular NCO's to train the new squadrons eighty or so eager volunteer applicants - who were for the most part aviation enthusiasts, and who saw themselves as future pilots, but were happy to graded Aircraftsmen Second Class under training. A combination of vacancies were available, with a limited choice of trades. The majority were required as engine and airframe fitters, though others trained as Wireless Operators, armourers, Equipment Section (store bashers), sheet metal workers / blacksmiths, Motor Transport Section drivers, clerks, and the coveted Air-Gunner. |
