Intelligence Summary

84 G.C.C. Intelligence Summary No. 165 6/3 to 9/3.                                  S E C R E T

6 - 8/3. For three consecutive days weather prevented all operations by 84 Group apart from occasional weather recces.

The GAF has been similarly inactive except for two or three operations on the 7th. The first of these was an attempt to intercept bombers during the morning. In the afternoon there was activity in the Rheine / Enschede area by one or two Gruppen, probably covering jet A/C landings. 83 Group destroyed 3 of 15 Me. 109 over Rheine without loss to themselves. (It is worth noting that in this combat the enemy claimed two Spitfires - possibly a case of mistaken identity.)

9/3 Today, weather began to clear slightly from the west, but low cloud prevailed in most areas for the greater part of the day.

A/Recce

Though cloud hampered Armed Recce observations, there appeared to be little or no movement in 84 Group area east of the RHINE, and only occasional isolated MT were seen and attacked.

609 Sqdn went to investigate a report by 35 Wing of barges N, of OVERFLAKKE. They scored many direct hits with R/P and cannon on 8 barges and 2 small tugs in harbour, and all were claimed as damaged. S/Ldr ROBERTS was hit by intense light flak from SOMMERSDIJK (D.55) and force landed on the island.

Interdiction

123 Wing and 146 Wing had considerable success on Interdiction in N.W. Holland, claiming between them a total of 12 cuts. 193 Sqdn hit and damaged the Rail / River bridge at Raalte (V.02), but unfortunately lost their leader (S/Ldr Erasmus).

183 Sqdn scored 2 d/hits on the Rail / River bridge E. of ZWOLLE, and claim it destroyed.

Routes cut were:-

ARNHEM - WINTERWIJK branch line, 2 cuts (loco destroyed)

MEPPEN - HASELUNNE (Z.85), 2 cuts

ZWOLLW - ALMELO (one bridge destroyed, another damaged) 5 cuts.

HENGELO - OLDENZAAL, 3 cuts

Other operations

135 Wing Tempests carried out an afternoon sweep over Rheine - Munster in anticipation of enemy reaction to Allied Heavies, but the GAF stayed on the ground. 131 Wing escorted Mediums to a target at DORSTEN this morning and 132 Wing provided an afternoon escort to HALTERN (A.55).

The results of the first attack were unobserved, but the M/Yards at HALTERN were seen to be on fire after the second. During the operation, 332 Sqdn attacked and damaged 3 locos shunting E. of DULMEN.

Weather in the battle area precluded close support operations.

Enemy Air

During the night, F/W 190 operated in the Cologne - Bonn areas, presumably attempting to attack our ground forces. There were no indications of any day operations, and no apparent reaction to the morning or afternoon raids by Allied Heavies.
