A Letter from Wells
Reference
:-
No. 609 (WR) Squadron, 609S/DO/JCW.
Royal Air Force,
Tangmere,
Sussex.
26th. March, 1944. Dear
Ziggy,
How are things going - or not going - with you these days? My spies seem
unable to get many 'plots' on you so I can only suppose you have been away on
one of your famous spots of leave.
Anyhow my chief reason for writing is to send on the well deserved
bouquet (as distinct from rocket) contained in the attached letter from Air
Ministry. If you are not careful I can see you being pitched nilly-willy in to
the Archivery or what-ever it is - to rewrite the diaries of all the other
Squadrons.
I take a dim
view of the 'suggestion' in para 3, as I know you always took particular care to
give the nationality of anyone other than mere U.K-borns.
I am sorry to have to tell you that Charles Detal was killed a few days
ago. - Spun in low down during a practice flight. Very sad and quite a blow. We
can ill afford to lose types like that at a time like this. I feel very sorry
for his wife who does not enjoy the best of health and must feel pretty lonely.
Adj Watts is going through the piles of bumph in the Orderly room and
what-not. He has just discovered the original autographed Squadron Badge. Do you
think I should send it off to Air Commodore Peake for safe keeping? There are
also a few photographs of Orde's drawings of Paul, Duke and two other chaps.
What to do?
I have just returned from a few days leave - enforced in some measure by
a dose of tonsillitis. It was a very good thing anyway as I don't know when I
shall get leave again.
I have agitated for your return to the fold but the fact that you are a
Flight Lieutenant seems to be the stumbling block. The niches - where they can
be made - are only for F/O's and what nots.
Watelet has returned to the fold and seems none the worse for his
experiences. He is not actually posted to us yet, but came down to see us during
his leave.
