Waste AFoE started the first public can collection in Aberdeen, several years ago. Aberdeen City Council were disinterested in starting such a scheme. So we continued the service for a year until they took over the well used service. Waste continues to be a crucial issue in Aberdeen. European directives are coming into force limiting the amount of waste that authorities can send to landfill, forcing them to find alternatives. Aberdeen City Council gave the waste company SITA, a 25-year contract to manage Aberdeen’s municipal waste by the City Council. As a requirement of that contract (we believe) they then applied for planning permission to build a 160,000 tonnes per annum incinerator at Altens overlooking the community of Torry. We do not believe that there was proper consideration of alternatives. The specification for the contract required an ability to incinerate. We mounted a campaign against this incinerator proposal and with a large participation from other organisations and individuals in the city it was finally refused. We now feel that Aberdeen City council are following a far more sensible course. They are introducing more doorstep collection of separated household waste around the city. The collection of composable material is also reducing the quantity of waste being put into our limited landfill space. We hope that the local business community and council will develop ways of utilising these separated materials to make salable products.
