Sydney
2000
The Olympic Games is without doubt the world’s biggest sporting event. Over the 17 days of Olympic competition, elite athletes are watched by more people in the world than any other sporting event. Great Britain’s 321 strong Olympic team finished the Sydney Olympics with their best medal haul for 80 years. The British sailing team was the most successful group within the entire Olympic team, British boats competed in eight of the nine dinghy and keelboat classes in Sydney, and won medals in five; three gold and two silvers. The British medal haul exceeded that of the host country, to top the medal table in sailing. After lying in Bronze medal position for a short period we unfortunately had one bad day that knocked us out of the medals. We came back with a third in the final race to finish 6th overall, the best British Tornado finish for many years. Initially slightly upset, but on reflection we were up against people who had sailed the Tornado class for longer than we had been sailing! [We have a huge amount of photos that will be online soon]
