"May and Hutchinson win UK Nationals!"
Having crewed a Tornado for two years now, I had a go at steering it this
weekend, and won the UK Nationals!
Hugh was meant to be doing the Melges 24 Worlds so couldn't do the event, so I
got Joe Hutchinson, our tune-up crew from the Games to crew for me. We figured
it would be good for me to do a bit of helming, as I think you learn a lot
being able to do a bit of both. Having not helmed an event though for three
years, and with only about 2 hours experience of helming a Tornado, I was
slightly nervous about the prospect. The other UK squad boats decided not to
attend due to other commitments, leaving us with a fleet of ten boats, mainly
from Whitstable. Dave Williams and Ian Rhodes were there though, the 1992
& 1996 Olympic representatives in the Tornado.
We lead the first race for most of the way, but still finding our feet and
making a few too many silly mistakes Dave & Ian sneaked past up the final
beat.
We sorted ourselves out for the second race though and lead from the start, to
tie the series overnight. On Sunday we had a good twin wiring breeze,
and with growing confidence we won both races by quite large margins.
1st Adam May & Joe Hutchinson (2) 1 1 1 3 points
2nd Dave Williams & Ian Rhodes 1 2 2 (2) 5 points
This win follows on nicely from our second place at the Europeans, and our
third at the Worlds. The 2001 season is pretty much finished now, so we
have a winter of equipment testing before a very busy 2002, when we have all
the Olympic classes regattas, our Europeans, and Worlds all quite close
together.
