Husband's Death Notes
An Engineer aged 69 of Natural Decay at Hambrook notified by Matilda Coombs present at his death (Matilda still illiterate)
Husband's General Notes
RWJC had said that GGG Grandfather (whose he was refering to I'm not sure) had come from Radstock and had moved to Winterbourne he was an engineer in the mines at Coalpit Heath.
From the various sources James was and Engineer, possibly in the mines near Bitton and later at Coalpit Heath, an occupation continued by his son James. By the early 1850s (from daughter Sarah Ann's marriage certificate) he has become a miller with his other son Joseph and possibly son-in-law James Dudden, Sarah Ann's husband. It appears that sometime later he moves from Winterbourne, possibly with Joseph and Matilda, to Hambrook, and perhaps to the Mill itself. He dies thare in 1868 and is referred to as an Engineer on his death certificate.
Census details for James's and Sarah's birthplaces are confused:
for 1851, a transcription, states James was born in Keynsham and Sarah in Camerton
for 1861 states James was born in Somerton and Sarah in Keynsham. obviously at least one of the censuses is wrong.
The name Hicks appears to have been fairly common in the Keynsham and Bitton areas and there is at least one family of Coombs's in Camerton some of whome move to Radstock. So, perhaps the notion that the family originated from Radstock, might not be wrong if, for James, Camerton were to be confused with Somerton
<<a href="../coombs_radstock.html">>The Coombs Families of Camerton and Radstock<<\A>>
Some of that family are documented in "The Journal of a Somerset Rector 1803-1843" written by James Skinner who WAS the rector of Camerton. The book was edited by Howard and Peter Coombs (assumed to be the Howard in that family).
Also gaining a mention is an 'overseer' called Hicks!

Could this the the Sarah Hicks that made a sampler thats still owned by the family(with VKG).
It reads "Sarah Hix Her Work Aged 10 Years", if not then perhaps an earlier ancestor. There was a letter written to The Times commenting about the workmanship, sent by either Evelyn or Kate Coombes (Noyce)
