ADOPTION SUPPORT has merged with AFTER ADOPTION

Two of the UK’s leading adoption support charities merge

25th January 2012: Two of the UK’s adoption charities have merged. Adoption Support, a charity supporting all parties to adoption in the West Midlands since 1994, will become part of After Adoption.

By joining forces with based national charity After Adoption, the services will be maintained and developed throughout the West Midlands.

After Adoption is a voluntary adoption agency working across England and Wales, finding families for children and providing the support that makes placements work and has a track record for innovative practice and service development.

The services currently provided by Adoption Support will continue and the regional office base in Birmingham will be retained.

Lynn Charlton, Chief Executive of After Adoption, says “We have worked closely with Adoption Support throughout our history and are pleased to be able to pool our collective experience. Adoption Support has done some ground breaking work and we are encouraged that the experienced team want to continue to work with us and share their knowledge.

“We are contacting everyone who is currently receiving a service from Adoption Support and I want to reassure them again that we are committed to providing ongoing uninterrupted support in the future.

“By consolidating resources and experience in this manner it is hoped that we are able to have a greater impact to more people for as long as is needed. After Adoption is privileged to become custodians of Adoption Support’s legacy.”

The merger also means that After Adoption’s wider services to adoptive families – including the acclaimed SafeBase Parenting Programme – will be more accessible to families across the West Midlands and After Adoption hopes to build partnerships and collaborations across the sector.

Julie McBride, Manager of Adoption Support welcomes the move, saying “this merger means that the work we started 30 years ago will continue. We have a great deal in common with After Adoption and we are pleased to entrust the future of adoption support services in the West Midlands to them.”

Professor Hugh McLaughlin, Chair of After Adoption, said “this is a fantastic opportunity to combine the considerable talents of two important organisations to increase our public benefit and make a real difference to society.”

Both organisations have been influential in the development of current adoption and adoption support legislation and practice and After Adoption will continue to represent the learning of both organisations from working with thousands of adopted adults, adoptive families, children and birth relatives every year at a national level.

About After Adoption

After Adoption is one of the UK’s leading adoption charities and provides services throughout the UK and Wales.

Through its adoption agency, Families that Last, it helps to find families for children that are seen as ‘hard to place’ and might otherwise live out their lives in the care system. Since 1990 it has placed over 100 children with their ‘forever family’.

After Adoption also runs the only national free adoption helpline; ActionLine 0800 0 568 578.
