12 Hour Charity 'Spinathon'

Saturday 9th February saw our 12 Hour Spinathon take place. The fundraising event was kindly organised and hosted by SP Fitness Professionals Personal Training Studio, Aldridge, Walsall .

The purpose of the event was to raise money to fund our innovative work with adopted children & young people. None of this important work is directly funded by our service level agreements with local authorities and it is therefore crucial that funds are raised by other means.

Our work with young adopted people aims to improve their quality of life by raising their confidence and self esteem, minimise the impact of trauma experienced during their journey through the care system, allow them to share their thoughts, feelings and fears with each other, help facilitate a smoother transition from childhood to adulthood and help give them a voice in the types of services and support they receive. To do this we provide young adopted people several residential camps each year, regular activity days for different age groups, individual life story work, one to one counselling and volunteering opportunities to help others younger than themselves.

Adoption Support is the only organisation in the West Midlands able to provide such a range of specialised services for adopted children & young people. Without these services many children’s lives would be affected so donations help us continue this valuable work.

The Spinathon started at 8am and the 12 hours were divided into 20 minute sessions so that as many people as possible could take part. Many members of Adoption Support staff, their family and friends attended and the remaining sessions were filled by members of the training studio. Members of staff will be delighted to see that a number of photos of them in action have made their way onto our website for general consumption!

Several members of staff cycled more than one session and two gym members heroically kept the bike running for a full hour. Julie McBride, our Registered Manager brought the event to a close with a spirited sprint to the finish.

Those who attended received certificates to verify their efforts and the whole day was a great success, so far raising several hundred pounds. Given this success, we may repeat the event on a grander scale at some point in the future.

Adoption Support would like to sincerely thank Ash and Tom of SP Fitness Professionals Personal Training Studio for organising the event, providing the equipment and giving up their time in order to make the day a success. We also wish to thank all those who took part in the event as well as everyone out there who kindly made a donation to us.
