Caving

Vertical travel in a cave used to be via wire ladders. These were cumbersome and slow to use.

Nowadays SRT rope techniques are used. Single Rope Technique allows the caver to rapidly descend by abseiling. Ascending the rope is then achieved by mechanical devices attaching the caver to the rope. It is then possible to slowly pull yourself up the rope.

Bill Norton
I am a forty year old Radiographer working for University Hospital Birmingham Trust. I have always enjoyed competitive events and am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to compete in this once in a lifetime challenge. I am currently training for the 2006 Iron Bridge Triathlon and I enjoy playing all sports including football, squash, badminton and tennis.

I enjoy adventure activities such as caving and have recently taken part in the Three Peaks Challenge and the Tough Guy Race. I am also a professional musician looking for inspiration for my next song. I really enjoy travelling and can’t wait to take part in this great adventure, raise money for the NSPCC, and be a member of the winning team of course!
