Fitness and Training

Mental torment

Peak physical fitness will not be the only requirement that we have to develop and maintain.

Conditioning and adaptation to the cold is also an essential part of the training. With the promise of a good cold winter this year, trips to Scotland and the Welsh mountains should help.

The other aspect, which again is difficult to train for, is mental training to withstand the strain of multiple days in a difficult environment.

Toughening up
According to Ranulph Fiennes in "Fit for Life", maximum aerobic training is the main key to increasing the ability to exercise without tiring. Regular strength training will be essential to toughen ourselves against injury and assist in the sledge hauling.
Economical movement is achieved by improving our techniques in all the required skills and by mental training.

Much of our training involved long hill runs and trips out to the hills and mountains during the weekends.
During the winter months we have been utilising a WaterRower rowing machine to allow us to continue training in the evenings in front of the telly!
