The Ninth Wave was one of those stories which lived in my mind for years.  Inspiration for it came from a Kate Bush concept-album of the mid-80's in which a young woman lost at sea reflects on her life and loves as she awaits rescue.

Although that image stayed in my mind, the tenet of the story slowly evolved.  Sudden disaster can strike anyone, no matter what their age or era, or however advanced their civilization has become.  It's who we are and what we are that comes to the fore at such times, and enables us to deal with the crises life throws at us.

Orpheus Rising: The Almond Tree came about when the dreadful aftermath of Hurricane Katrina became known around the world.  I was inspired to write the short story for the Loose-Id Katrina Aid appeal blog.  In the Victorian "Language of Flowers" the almond blossom stands for Hope, and I chose this as the theme for telling the love story of Jan Hughes, a character from The Ninth Wave.  It reflects my hope that those whose lives were blighted by the disaster will find soon peace and security.

Mr. Grey & The Hotel Ghosts is another of those stories which evolved over the years.  I hope it will be but the first of many stories about Martin Grey and Claudia Mackenzie.
