THE BRIDPORT AMMONITE

Situated in the garden at the rear of Bridport Arts Centre this ceramic ammonite is over 2 metres in diameter and consists of 80 individual segments. It was made by the Dorset Pottery Group to celebrate the 2nd Millennium. Each of the outer segments depicts a scene of Dorset history on a theme 'Back Through the Ages'. The fossil record of the county is illustrated on the first inner layer of segments. The sculpture has been fired to stoneware temperature and finished in a manganese gold pigment which looks like the iron pyrites finish of some natural fossils found in the area. The project was sponsored by the West Dorset District Council and the generous donations of local businesses and residents. Full details of the illustrations on the ammonite are given on a plaque mounted on a wall in the Cafe at the Arts Centre.
