New Roots, a competition for young musicians

Are you under 25?

Do you sing or play traditionally based music?

This annual event is for young performers of all styles of traditional or contemporary folk, roots or world music, whether you play traditional material or write your own. Categories are under 18 and 18-24.

There is no one ‘winner’, but it’s a great day, a chance to get your music heard and loads of great prizes are awarded to the most appropriate acts. Prizes in 2011 included performance opportunities at Towersey and Warwick Folk Festivals and at folk clubs, including Redbourn, Waltham Abbey, Chesham, Letchworth, Norwich and Lewes folk clubs.

To enter New Roots 2012,  send a CD with up to 15 minutes of your music plus a hard copy of a completed entry form to: Alison Macfarlane, 40 Warwick Road, St Albans, Herts AL1 4DL. In addition, please email your completed entry form to Alison.Macfarlane@lineone.net. Please do not email your entry unless you have consulted us first, because of limitations on attachment size.

Closing date 31 January 2012

The final will take place on Sunday April 22 2012 at Trestle Arts Base, Russet Drive, St Albans. Performers short-listed by the judges will be invited to take part.  Further information will be posted on this web site www.new-roots.org.uk as it becomes available.
