WOODTURNING HISTORY
This page is now being developed. If any
one has any useful info that they would like to share please let us know
Woodturning was a very popular source of wooden items in
the Middle Ages and well known artists and such as Leonardo da Vinci and
the German sculptor and woodcarver, Veit Stoss, and Guilds
were early exponents of the trade.
Much later industrialisation led to the decline of the trade and many
items previously hand made were mass produced and the craft of
woodturning was driven away from the larger industrialised areas, and
only a few craftsmen were left in the rural areas and villages of
Europe.
Professional woodturners still strive to compete with mass produced
goods and are often forced to produce repetitive items to make a living,
and until recently they have rarely had time to or equipment to developed
unique design ideas of their own.
Woodturning as a hobby however has become very popular over the last 20
years and the whole subject has seen an awakening of many old techniques
and new tools and machinery to enable new and exiting ideas to be
developed by professionals as well as hobbyists. This has resulted in
some very well known modern day woodturners who are now driving the
subject to new levels of technical and artistic
appreciation. To be continued |
