The S.U.F. was formed to meet the needs of those who cannot for whatever reason attend a Unitarian Church, bearing in mind that there are only four such in the whole of Scotland! Or indeed to meet the needs of those who do not wish to attend a church. I personally believe that God, if there is such a Being, and according to Unitarian belief that is purely a matter of individual personal belief, does not measure us by our attendance at church but by the life that we live. We are taught that we should love our neighbours as much as ourselves!

As a long term member of the Unitarian Peace Fellowship (and a previous President of that body) I wholly support their statement - 

"We believe that PEACE; UNDERSTANDING and RECONCILIATION between peoples can only be established through love and co-operation at all levels."

The Future of the S.U.F . . . 

 . . . is in YOUR hands! As I write, we have in the funds of the S.U.F., about £200 which isn't very much to cover our expenses! Our President has proposed that the subscription should be increased to £10 per person per year, and that this should be paid on or before the 30th June ... rather than the 31st.December! This has been put to the members of our Committee and has been agreed by them. I have spoken with some of our members and they too have agreed with this solution. So, it's now up to you.

If you agree, then please send me your subscription.
The cheque should be made payable to the S.U.F. 

If however, you disagree, then please contact me as soon as possible with your comments.

Then secondly, I have just returned from Orkney where I met a number of friends who show the effects of ageing! I too, am retired! So I must ask for someone willing to take over from me the task of acting as Secretary/Organiser/Treasurer of the S.U.F. Our daughter, the Rev. Anne Wicker has agreed to continue in her position as Minister. It is obvious that these three positions can be held by one person, but it is perhaps better if one person acts as Secretary/Organiser and another as Treasurer. The alternative is to accept the offer of the National Unitarian Fellowship of free membership of that body for a short period. I have to say, however, that the N.U.F. (of which I have been a member for some 48 years) is a very different organisation than the S.U.F. in that it is not nearly so personal! If the S.U.F. is allowed to collapse, then I can assure present members that I am quite happy to be a contact person for those in need!!! Please give this matter your urgent consideration and let me know what you think.

DECISION MAKING

5. For poise - walk with the knowledge you'll never walk alone.

6. People - even more than things have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed; NEVER throw out anybody. Remember, if ever you need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands - one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.

7. The beauty of any person is not in the clothes worn, the figure he/she carries, or the way the hair is worn. The beauty of a person is seen in the eyes, because that is the doorway to the heart, the place where love abides.

AVOID HATRED AND ANGER

He abused me; he beat me; he defeated me; he robbed me -in those who harbour such thoughts hatred will never cease; in those who do not harbour such thoughts hatred will cease. For hatred does not cease by hatred at any time; hatred ceases by love - this is an old rule.

The world does not know that all must come to an end; but for those who know it, their quarrels will cease. Let a person leave anger, let him/her forsake pride... Let a person overcome anger by love, let him/her overcome evil by good, greed by liberality, liar by truth.

Beware of anger; control your body, your tongue, your mind. Practise instead, virtue at all times
