I
have an ability to interpret a concept in to a practical solution
using electronics and software. My spatial reasoning is excellent. I
am consensual, considerate, listening and can express confidence in
my work. A merit of mine is to consider the consequences of what I
do beyond the work in front of me.
My
experience includes; Analogue, digital and micro-controllers
electronics, embedded C, and assembler. My work includes designing
may types of sensors including; shaft encoders, temperature sensors,
photo diodes, and linear image sensors that require fast data
transfer into a micro-controller. Low voltage and some high voltage
switch mode and linear power supplies and power drivers. DC and
stepper motors, and other electromechanical devices. All achieving
good function, EMC performance and first time right. Worked to LVD
(Extra Low Voltage Directive), EMC, Intrinsically Safe and Automotive
Industry Standards and others to attain a CE mark.

Manufacturer
of scientific instruments. This company employed me as an Electronics
Design Engineer in their Research & Development Department. I saw
through the company’s transition from largely mechanical
instruments to Electronics based instruments. I started as a
Technician, and progressed to Design Engineer. I worked with a
Project manager, Physicist, High Level Software Engineer and a
Technician. I also work with a mechanical draughtsman, and other
people.
I
gained experience seeing a number of small and larger projects from
conception and specification, through planning, design, development,
final testing, and on-going revision of the instruments which the
company manufactures. I used Prato analysis and half split methods to
plan and manage my work. I work well in design meetings listening to
and encourage alternative viewpoints.
- Programming
in assembler, and predominately C using PCLint to check my C code.
This was my predominant job function, to interfaced with the
electronics that I designed.
- Designed
analogue, digital, and software based filtering and averaging.
- Developed
the firmware to carry out the core function of all instruments,
which was mostly refractometry and polarimetry. For example light
level control loop.
- Phase measurement with variable averaging based
filter. Wavelength correction of an LED using Voltage drop
correlation to wavelength using linear regression.
- Differential
method of edge detection for poorly defined light to dark transition
with averaging.
- Various
I/O including; LED, LCD displays, Parallel, RS232 and RS485, with
turn around control serial and parallel ports software and hardware.
- Analog
design including; integrated circuits, discrete semiconductors, and
resistor networks.
- Micro-controller
and microprocessor design with SRAM, EPROM or FLASH, software and
hardware.
- Digital
Design using random logic and programmable logic including; Xilinx
and Atmel CPLD.
- Designed
linear and switch-mode power supplies both low voltage and mains
voltage.
- Various
light detection and amplification using photo-cells, Linear Image
Sensors both CCD and non-CCD types. This required low frequency low
noise amplification and bandwidth limiting, or high speed data
transfer to a micro-controller.
- Screening
and developed good practices for good Electromagnetic Compatibility.
- Thermo-electric
power drivers with PID control.
- Stepper
motor and Brush-less DC motor power driver and with speed control
using a PID, with a novel quad phase comparator implemented in CPLD.
Other
drivers of other electromechanical devices.
- Analogue
to Digital conversion, and Digital to Analogue conversion.
- Simulation,
creation of test, and calibration utilities using; excel
spreadsheets, basic programs (VB), or paper pen and calculator.
- Worked
to LVD (Extra Low Voltage Directive), EMC, and Intrinsically Safe
Standards.
1975-1977:- Jermyn
