Date : Sat. August 28th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Shrewton II Venue : Littleton

The big game, win and we could be promoted.  Skipper Anscombe lost another vital toss and had to bat first on a wet track  Dave Guy and Steve Cross decided not to hang around and were removed cheaply.  Pete Bayless (18) then joined Nigel Dibben who was performing his usual anchor role.  Rob Jackson (17) kept the score  ticking over, but Barton (3-18) made life difficult.  Dibben eventually went for a patient 63, before Paul Anscombe (27) took the score to 161, a respectable and defendable total.

In reply, Shrewton had a good start with Cruse (31) and Barton (29), both being especially harsh on Hugh Baker.  Mark Dibben (3-50) then removed both in quick succession, and other wickets fell leaving Shrewton at 67-5.  From a comfortable position, Davies and Claw dragged the game back.  Claw fell for 53, (although Steve Cross dropped him on 10), and must have thought his job was done as only 25 was required off the last 10 overs with 5 wickets in hand.  Anscombe having been smashed my Claw, resorted to Nigel Dibben and his trundlers.  It paid off.  His 3-13 in the growing gloom, one from Cook, and a run out saw Shrewton lose their last wickets for just 14 runs.

Now all that was needed was for Stockton to beat Steeple Langford, but it was no surprise to hear the game was called off ensuring both teams maintained 1st and 2nd positions.   *** STOP PRESS ***  It appears the information regarding the cancellation of this match was incorrect.  The game was played, and Stockton beat Steeple by the massive margin of 1 wicket.  So, final league tables pending, it seems we have grabbed the second promotion spot.

Champagne Moments : Hugh Baker for his athletic one handed catch.

Dick of the Day : tba

Fines : tba : Nigel Dibben - , Hugh Baker - , Phil Cook - , Paul Anscombe - , John Elford - , Rob Jackson - , Dave Guy - , Pete Bayless - , Steve Cross - , Mark Dibben - , Ben Robbins - .

Date : Sat. August 28th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Farley II Venue : Farley

Needing 8 points to guarantee the title against second placed Farley, Littleton won the vital toss and inserted the home side on the wet track.  Will Lecomber continued his brilliant season and soon removed the top order with 4-29.  None of the Farley batsman got going, and Grant Baben (3-50) and Ravi Anwar (2-19) soon removed the remaining resistance leaving Farley 114 all out.

In reply despite losing a couple of wickets, Ravi Anwar with a patient 51, and Steve Barrow with 41no saw Littleton comfortably home with loads of time to spare.  With only one defeat all season, this was a superb finish underlining the teams superiority in the league.

Date : Sat. August 21st 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Overton Venue : Overton

The skipper appeared to lose a disastrous toss on a very wet track.  It did not look good for him at 15-2 off 12 overs, then 31-3, Messrs Guy, Dibben and Jackson all back in the pavilion.  Pete Bayless then compiled a patient 36 to get the score rolling, before Phil Cook and Paul Anscombe had a partnership of 62.  Cook went for 51, but Andy Walker then joined in.  A partnership of 52, before Anscombe went for 60.  The score was nudged through the 200's before late boundaries from fired up Walker (22no) saw a final total of 212-6.  An excellent effort on a slow wet track.

Overton then employed devious tactics.  Knowing we had to field, their Tea Lady put on an amazing home made spread.  Pete Bayless paid for his two portions of gateaux by not being able to move behind the stumps for the first 10 overs.  Overton's reply never got going and they lost a few early wickets.  Opener Demelvin was dropped by Walker early on off Cook, a catch which on a difficulty scale of 1-10, would merit -1 !  Overton decided not to make a game of it, with the exception of J Maxwell (32) who greeted Paul Anscombe with an almighty six off his first ball, and the LWH extras (25).  Nigel Dibbens plodders gained him 3-26, and Demelvin just stayed put eventually passing 50 in the 41st over.  Overton closed on a fairly uneventful 137-7.

Champagne Moments(s) : Andy Walker, after the sledging from the Wicketkeeper saying he would blast the next ball back over the bowlers head....which he did !.  Phil Cook, for blasting 3 consecutive sixes.

Dick of the Day : Ermmmm, Andy Walker again.  That dropped catch.  It will go down in the archives, a contender for Drop of the Century !

Fines : Nigel Dibben - 7, Andy Walker - 8(x2)[0] , Phil Cook - 11(0), Paul Anscombe - 8, John Elford - 5, Rob Jackson - 6, Dave Guy - 5, Pete Bayless - 4, Steve Fenner - 8, Mark Dibben - 8, Ben Robbins - 7.

Date : Sat. August 21st 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Michelmersh & Timsbury III Venue : Littleton

This skipper also lost the toss and had to bat on a sodden track.  A steady and very patient start was made by Derek Dibben (25) and Ravi Anwar (34).  Wickets then tumbled at regular intervals, and only veteran Alan Zanetti with a quick fire 30 subsequently troubled the scorers.  A final total of 139, disappointing yet still good on the damp track.

In reply, Michelmersh made the track look unplayable, as the ever dependable Will Lecomber steamed in.  He destroyed the top order with an incredible 6-12, and was ably supported by young Greg Sullivan (2-9) and Alan Zanetti [hey, he can bowl as well (2-19)].  M & T's eventually were dismissed for a poor 51, leaving the rest of the evening available to indulge in the food provided from the local wedding.

Date : Sat. August 14th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Whiteparish Venue : Whiteparish

Littleton were invited to bat first at the 'characteristic' Whiteparish ground, on a damp and unpredictable track.  With the 2nd Team gave off, there was quite a crowd to cheer on the lads, and boy was it needed !! Littleton proceeded to play some poor shots against ordinary bowling with none of Dave Guy, Rob Jackson, Steve Cross, Pete Bayless or Pete Arculus making double figures.  Nigel Dibben remained giving hope, but at drinks, the score was a dismal looking 55-5.  As this stage the Editor departed, so the remainder of the report needs to be padded out when received from the Skipper, but Nigel Dibben finished on 65no, so must have been ably supported by Paul Anscombe, Phil Cook, Steve Fenner and Steve Barrow to take the final total to a respectable 160-8.

In reply though Whiteparish achieved their required total for the loss of 7 wickets.  With Burghclere and Shrewton losing, Stocktons game being called off, but Steeple Langford winning, we find ourselves down in third place.  We need to win our last two, and hope Stockton can beat Steeple.

Champagne Moment : Belatedly announced, after nagging from the recipient.  Steve Cross for taking not one, not two, but an astounding three catches in the outfield.

Dick of the Day : Steve Fenner, walking naked around the pavilion for a shower before realising the 'shower' was non existent, it was a toilet.

Fines : tba : Nigel Dibben - , Steve Barrow - , Phil Cook - , Paul Anscombe - , Steve Cross - , Rob Jackson - , Dave Guy - , Pete Bayless - , Steve Fenner - , Mark Dibben - , Pete Arculus - .

Date : Sat. August 14th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Redlynch & Hale III Venue : Littleton

The easiest game of the season.  Redlynch were unable to field a side, so the average maintained, and unless the final two games are lost with disastrous points, silverware should be coming our way.  This did though give the opportunity for a couple of second team players to be 'dropped' to the first team for their fixture.

Date : Sat. August 7th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Broughton Venue : Littleton

Losing the toss again on a scorching day, skipper Paul Anscombe feared for his life returning to the pavilion.  Broughton opener Ian Bussey then clobbered Mark Dibben for three fours in the first over, but Phil Cook removed his middle stump a couple of overs later.  After that, there was little or no resistance with the exception of opener Copper, who patiently carried his bat for 27no.  The spin of Anscombe (3-14) again proved valuable, but it was Cook who took the honours with 5-22, with Broughton eventually closing on 85 all out, of which extras on 22 was the only other double figure tally.

In reply, Bussey was quick and aggressive, but openers Dave Guy and Nigel Dibben saw him off, and runs accumulated.  Guy then started smashing boundaries all around the ground, and the winning run brought up his 50, with Dibben finishing with a patient and classy 25no.  So another win batting second, this time without losing a wicket and gaining maximum points.

Champagne Moment : Mark Dibben for his aggressive attitude in taking on the local youth who refused to move from the sightscreen.

Dick of the Day : Steve Fenner, thought he packed his cricket shirt, he actually packed his wifes Winnie The Pooh nightie !.

Fines : Nigel Dibben - 7, Andy Walker - 5, Phil Cook - 7, Paul Anscombe - 6, Steve Cross - 6, Rob Jackson - 3, Dave Guy - 3, Pete Bayless - 3, Steve Fenner - 8(x2), Mark Dibben - 5(0), Eliot Harwood - 2.

Date : Sat. August 7th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Wellow & Plaitford II Venue : Wellow

Littleton's unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Wellow.  Batting first, Littleton collapsed to 3-3 but Dick Tanner (31) and Ravi Anwar (28) then put on 76.  R.Wrench then bowled superbly taking 5-12 with only Alan Zanetti (23) adding further runs leaving a final total of 133 all out.

In reply, despite losing three wickets, Wellow cruised to victory thanks to a one man effort from J. Lysandrides who took the bowling apart finishing on 84no.

Date : Sat. July 31st 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Andover IV Venue : London Road

A depleted side, missing three front line bowlers had to field in the heat on a superb batting track after skipper Anscombe ignored suggestions from team-mates to change his call to tails.  Andover got off to a fast start, Nigel Dibben carted off his first three overs, and Andover had 40 on the board in 6 overs.  Anscombe with a superb one handed slip catch dismissed the dangerous Baxter, but O'Reilly (28), Channon (25), Essex (21) and Greene(25) kept piling on the runs.  Anscombe (5-54) [him again ?] then saw benefits of spin and with Phil Cook (3-34) with his usual pace and accuracy tore through the batsmen, leaving Andover 186 all out.

In  reply Nigel Dibben having been dropped off a full toss in the first over, then tried to see if it worked twice...it didn't and he fell cheaply.  Dave Guy struggling with an injured calf incurred while trying to jog (that's fast for Dave) after the ball, and Rob (yes I lasted more than one ball) Jackson hung around for what seemed an eternity, apparently bemused by the spin of Andrews and Littlehales.  In the process, they offered no less than 7 catches, all dropped !  Jackson eventually went for 25 (one less than the number of overs he faced) and Guy for 57.  Pete Bayless(17) and Steve Cross(18) quickly upped the run rate, but it was left to Phil Cook 29no (show off !) and Paul Anscombe 11no (not him again) to see Littleton home to victory with two overs to spare.  A special mention goes to Matt Woods and Rich Pye who stood in at short notice and charged around the field all afternoon showing up the less fit regulars.

Champagne Moment : Paul Anscombe for his superb slip catch.

Dick of the Day : Paul Anscombe, for losing the toss in 28 degrees.

Fines (TBA): Nigel Dibben - , Andy Walker - , Phil Cook - , Paul Anscombe - , Steve Cross - , Rob Jackson - , Dave Guy - , Pete Bayless - , Colin Mansbridge - , Matt Woods - , Rich Pye -.

Date : Sat. July 31st 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Whiteparish II Venue : Littleton

Littleton continued their unbeaten season despite being severely depleted.  Batting first, Derek Dibben (60) and Ravi Anwar (57) put on a superb 128 for the first wicket. After that wickets fell at regular intervals, but a quick 24 from Alan Zanetti saw a final total of 188-8.

In reply Whiteparish had no answer to the Littleton bowling.  Grant Baben (4-17) and Alan Zanetti (4-16) destroyed all who dared to bat.  It was then left to Dave Snellgrove (who, some might say ?) playing after four years in retirement to take the final two wickets leaving Whiteparish 51 all out.  Again, a great team performance, especially considering the number of players absent.

Date : Sat. July 24th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Wherwell Venue : Littleton

Littleton continued their push for promotion with a tight victory against Wherwell, in a game memorable for the number of batsmen who gave their wickets away.  Batting first Littleton got off to a very poor start and lost wickets regularly including first-ballers for Rob Jackson and Phil Cook.  Dave Guy made a scratchy 18, but at 50-6, the game looked all but over.  Paul Anscombe then set about the bowling with a mixture of defence and aggression, and with one ball remaining of the innings he was on 49 and the team on 120. From the final delivery, a beamer, he somehow edged the ball over the 'keepers head for 6 bringing the extra point and his fifty.  Redhead bowled superbly taking 5-59.

In reply Wherwell had an nervous start, with taking Hugh Baker (3-34). At 88-5 with Marsh (40) and Archer (22) the game appeared won, but when both departed to Anscombe (2-32), Phil Cook (4-16) continued his excellent season with the ball whipping out the last few batmen leaving Wherwell 104 all out.

Champagne Moment : Paul Anscombe for his 50, and 6 off the last ball.

Dick of the Day : TBA.

Fines : Hugh Baker - 8, Mark Dibben - 7, Nigel Dibben - 8, Andy Walker - 6, Phil Cook - 9, Paul Anscombe - 10(0), Steve Cross - 7, Steve Fenner - 7, Rob Jackson - 8, Dave Guy - 6 , Pete Bayless - 6

Date : Sat. July 24th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Longparish II Venue : Longparish

Littleton maintained their unbeaten season against a spirited Longparish who belied their lowly league position.  Batting first, Littleton were never comfortable and runs were hard to come by with wickets falling at regular intervals.  Derek Dibben(34) then injected some aggression, and with the help of Dick Tanner(23no) and Alan Zanetti(21) the score was taken to a defendable 147-8.

In reply Longparish lost a couple of early wickets, but at 100-5 with 12 overs remaining were in a good position.  The introduction of Ravi Anwar (5-35) with his leggies, and the dependable John Elford (2-9) destroyed the lower order to secure a close victory, in a game played in excellent spirit.

Date : Sat. July 17th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Hurstbourne Priors Venue : Hurstbourne Priors

On an unpredictable wicket, Hurstbourne were invited to bat first, and with the total on 57-3 off 24 over, it seemed the right decision with Mark Dibben taking 2-43.  Hamson (68) and Collins (40) then took a liking to the bowling with sixes all over the field.  Paul Anscombe's 6 overs went for 50, but Nigel Dibben with 4-43 ensured the total remained achievable at 182-7.

In reply the ever reliable Nigel Dibben was bowled first ball, and with the other top order also falling cheaply, Littleton were in serious trouble at 34-4.  Pete Bayless and Phil Cook (19) led a mini revival giving hope, but after Bayless fell for an excellent 56, the last four wickets then crashed for 12 runs leaving Littleton 121 all out.  Hamson (4-43) and Cady (3-32) were the key bowlers for Hurstbourne.

Champagne Moment : TBA

Dick of the Day : TBA

Fines : TBA

Date : Sat. July 17th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Penton II Venue : Littleton

The bandwagon keeps rolling on, although the wheels nearly came off this week.  Batting first, second placed Penton were immediately in trouble from the consistent Will Lecomber who again returned excellent figures of 3-21.  With none of the batsmen getting started, Greg Sullivan 2-17, Grant Baben 2-26 and Alan Zanetti 2-21 removed the middle and late order leaving Penton 131 all out.

In reply, Littleton also struggled before Ravi Anwar (22) assisted by Alan Zanetti (19) and Dick Tanner (17) took the score near to the required total, but with wickets falling it needed an unlikely hero in Will Lecomber to blast a six and four to secure the victory.  The team remains unbeaten with a healthy distance between them and second placed team.

Date : Sat. July 10th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Amesbury Venue : Littleton

Skipper Paul Anscombe again won an important toss and asked Amesbury to bat.  Tidy bowling from Mark Dibben restricted the openers, but the introduction of Darren Sturt (yes, two weeks in a row chaps, getting a bit of a habit) destroyed the middle order.  His 4-25, plus 3-21 from Nigel Dibben and 2-33 from Paul Anscombe left the visitors on a lowly total of 121 all out.

In response Nigel Dibben and Dave Guy had an opening partnership of 70 before the rain intervened, reducing the required total to 94 off 23 overs.  Guy went for 29, but Pete Bayless kept Dibben (46no) company to ensure a comfortable victory.  With Stockton losing this meant that we took over as leaders of the Division.

Champagne Moment : TBA

Dick of the Day : TBA

Fines : TBA

Date : Sat. July 10th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : OT's & Romsey IV Venue : Away

The outstanding season continues !  OT's were put into bat and the Littleton bowlers destroyed the opposition.  Will Lecomber continued his rich form taking 4-13, and youngster Greg Sullivan also chipping in with 4 wickets, left OT's with a poor total of 82 all out.  In reply, with rain looming, runs had to be accumulated quickly.  Ray Fenner 36no and Pete Arculus 29 obliged and had no trouble knocking off the runs for the loss of only one wicket.  Still undefeated, still top of the table.

Date : Sat. July 3rd 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Colden Common Venue : Colden Common

Despite the downpours, the game did start on time, with Colden Common being invited to bat.  We were honoured with the presence of the Chronicle photographer, and 'keeper Andy Walker gave him his 'scoop' with a diving one handed catch to dismiss the opener off Mark Dibben.  Hugh Baker then bowled the dangerous Richard Saville second ball, then also the other opener leaving Common on 42-3.  Two rain breaks intervened and an early tea was taken.  Darren 'one game a season' Sturt then claimed a wicket with his second ball (a beamer he got away with), before Nigel 'Lillee' Dibben came into the attack.  He took a quick wicket, but his gentle trundlers were finding unknown life in the track, so much so that he was no-balled for intimidating bowling after three deliveries in one over pitched and reached the batsman over shoulder height.  With Common at 111-7, the heavens opened again and the match was abandoned.

Champagne Moment : None awarded

Dick of the Day : Pending.  Either Nigel Dibben for dangerous bowling or Andy 'shades' Walker for the photo published in the Chronicle.

Fines : Despite the curtailed match, numerous fineable offences were noted, unfortunately due to the Bar-B-Q, the fines committee did not actually meet.  Those offences remembered will be carried forward to next week.

Date : Sat. July 3rd 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Andover V Venue : Littleton

Although there were torrential downpours at 1pm and 2pm, an effort was made to start the game despite the concerns of the Groundsman.  Having lost the toss and been put in, Steve Barrow clobbered the opening bowlers for 15 off the first 2.4 overs before the heavens opened and the game was abandoned......much to the delight of the Groundsman !

Date : Sat. June 26th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Stockton Venue : Stockton

Little to be said.  Unbeaten Stockton knew they were going to be beaten by us and thus replaced at the top of the table.  So concerned were they, three different members of the Club phoned us before 10am to ensure we knew they were calling the game off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Date : Sat. June 26th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Farley II Venue : Littleton

It chucked it down at Littleton as well, but at least we had the decency to wait until 12:00 giving it a chance to dry up before contacting the opposition.

Date : Sat. June 19th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Steeple Langford Venue : Littleton

Littleton maintained their chase for the leadership with a comfortable win over Steeple Langford.  Nigel Dibben (24) and Dave Guy had 38 on the board after six overs, Dibben unusually outscoring Guy.  Then it became the Dave Guy show.  Several other Littleton batsmen came and went, but none ever reaching 20, but Guy kept blasting away.  His 50 came up in the 30th over, and the tail held around long enough to allow him to reach his century in the 41st over.  Ironically his only century last season was also against Steeple Langford.  Guy carried his bat for 107no in a final total of 207-7.

In reply Steeple never got going.  Tight bowling from Mark Dibben, Hugh Baker (2-25), Phil Cook (2-22) and John Elford (2-12) kept the runs down, and at 75-3 off 33 overs Steeple seemed to give up.  Rob Emms hit a quick fifty, but the innings petered out at 135-7.

Champagne Moment : Dave Guy, for his century.  Challenge - 'Facial Hair' ????

Dick of the Day : Phil Cook for the most dismal piece of fielding you will ever see.   *** Hot Press ***  An informal meeting of the fines committee decided to extend the Dick Of The Day to three players.  Apparently Mark and Nigel Dibben were 'let off' this weeks rent on the basis it was used to pay their Cricket Club subscriptions.  Was it seen ?  Was it 'eck, well if it was, it was probably in some local hostelry, or in Nigels case buying 10,000 coins from Sainsburys trying to get Chris Kirkland !  ps.  Nigel, the Webmasters son has had a swapsie of said Mr Kirkland for a couple of weeks, I just didn't know this at the time.

Fines : Hugh Baker - 13, Mark Dibben - 10(x2), Nigel Dibben - 10(x2), Andy Walker - 12, Phil Cook - 14(x2), Paul Anscombe - 11, Ben Robbins - 12, Steve Fenner - 11, John Elford - 7, Dave Guy - 5(0) , Ravi Anwar - 11

Date : Sat. June 19th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Michelmersh & Timsbury III Venue : Hunts Farm

Littleton remained top of the table mainly down to a superb maiden century from Pete Arculus and stunning bowling from Colin Mansbridge.  Batting first Arculus and Ray Fenner accumulated runs steadily in a superb stand of 134.  Fenner went for 40, allowing Derek Dibben (31) to join the onslaught.  None of the bowlers seemed threatening as Arculus celebrated his ton, and carried his bat for 117no in a total of 231-3.

Due to rain, the total was reduced to 221, and M&T's didn't look in the game at 86-5, taken apart by Greg Sullivan, 2 wickets and Mansbridge.  Then two youngsters, Beddoes and Birch, came to the crease, and made the bowling look very ordinary.  Both made fifties in a hundred partnership, and just when it looked they would win the game, old man Mansbridge unlocked his knees and came back for a second spell.  He removed both youngsters and the tail for remarkable figures of 7-38.  M&T's were all out for 210, the final wicket a superbly athletic catch by Derek Dibben on the boundary, only 11 runs short of their target.

Date : Sat. June 12th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Burghclere Venue : Littleton

In this top of the table clash, previously unbeaten Burghclere started well removing the first three Littleton batsmen for 30.  Pete Bayless (39) and Andy Walker (13) then put on 40 (the highest stand of the match !), before both fell to Pete Martin (3-43).  Phil Cook (28) and Paul Anscombe(18) got started but were out to poor shots, with R.Robinson (4-40) mopping up the tail.  The final total of 148 did not seem adequate on a good batting track.

The Littleton bowlers though thought differently.  Hugh Baker (3-14) and Phil Cook (4-17) destroyed the Burghclere innings with their accuracy and seam.  Pete Martin (27) hit a couple of lusty sixes, but when Anscombe (2-22) removed him the innings folded to 74 all out.

Champagne Moment : Andy Walker, for making the lady pensioner from the Bowls Club day.  Challenge - Tartan

Dick of the Day : Hugh Baker, persistent stupid comments, and crap shot to get out when told to stay there for 8 overs.

Fines : Hugh Baker - 9(x2), Mark Dibben - 6, Nigel Dibben - 9, Andy Walker - 7(0), Phil Cook - 10, Paul Anscombe - 9, Pete Bayless - 6, Steve Fenner - 5, Rob Jackson - 6, Dave Guy - 4 , Ravi Anwar - 5

Date : Sat. June 12th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Redlynch & Hale III Venue : Hale

Littleton remained unbeaten and top of the table after disposing of Redlynch on a ground with a very poor outfield.  Batting first the runs flowed with Derek Dibben and Steve Barrow (47) putting on a hundred partnership.  Dibben eventually went for a superb 81 and with Nigel Pervin hitting a quick fire 22, Littleton closed on 221-8.

In reply Redlynch, kept the run rate going, despite the nagging line of Will Lecomber.  But the introduction of youngster Greg Sullivan (4-37) and Old Timer Alan Zannetti (2-24) caused a major collapse, the starring moment being an outstanding catch by Andy Clarke on the boundary, despite having injured his back while walking to the crease to bat !  The home team were eventually all out for 154.

Interesting point of note regarding the Dibbens.  Derek makes 81, as did his sons Mark (8) and Nigel (1).

Date : Sat. June 5th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Donnington Venue : Donnington

Yes Donnington, contrary to the fixture card.  Having turned up at Burghclere we were advised fixtures had been amended, it appears that communication between us and the HCL has gone AWOL.  Luckily Donnington was only 15 minutes up the road, as due to the 1 hour delays already encountered on the A34 we were already late at Burghclere.  But we started 30 minutes late, put into bat by the opposition even though we only had 9 men at the time.  Strange ?  No the docile looking wicket was very lively. Rob Jackson, Dave Guy, Pete Bayless and Steve Cross did not hang around long, although Nigel Dibben was still there, and after 22 overs 47-4 did not look good. Enter Phil Cook to partner Dibben, and the game changed.  During their 100 partnership, runs accumulated steadily, both making their fifties.  Dibben eventually fell for 85, and Cook quickly followed for 56.  The mad dash to make 200 failed with 3 run outs in the last over leaving a respectable total of 198.

In reply Donnington accumulated steadily, but a constant fall of wickets left them at 94-6, primarily due to Mark Dibben (4-31) and Phil Cook (3-28) but  opener Lawrence was still there. 'Keeper Pete Bayless managed to juggle four 'dropped' catches in one attempt before eventually clinging on to it, legs akimbo on his back.  Hobbs then joined in and hit some lusty blows, and with Lawrence who carried his bat for 87 took Donnington worryingly close to their target before they were all out for 178.  Bayless also took four 'clean' catches to compliment the drops !

Champagne Moment : Nigel Dibben, 85 runs.

Dick of the Day : None Awarded.

Fines : None

Date : Sat. June 5th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Wellow & Plaitford II Venue : Littleton

Batting first, none of the Littleton batsmen ever established themselves into the twenties, but runs somehow accumulated with a significant assist from Extras, which top scored with 40 out of 148-9..

In reply, Wellow never got to grips with the consistency of Will Lecomber who bowled superbly taking 5-20.  The innings then faded to an eventual 102 all out.  That's four wins out of four, top of the table, what is going on ?  Submissions to the Enquirer please.

Date : Sat. May 29th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : South Wilts IV Venue : Littleton

Despite the rain potential, skipper Paul Anscombe elected to bat, which looked ominous when Rob Jackson was out first ball.  After some tidy bowling, Dave Guy 53 and Nigel Dibben 36 bolstered the score. When both fell quickly along with a couple of other wickets, Paul Anscombe 34 and Steve Cross 28 punished the bowling taking the final score to 200-6

In reply the South Wilts openers never looked in trouble and hurried the score along to 70.  Paul Anscombe then claimed one opener, and other wickets started to fall, but opener Stagg who eventually fell for 84 always kept them in the game, before Phil Cook (3-30, including a 12 year old 1st ball) and Ravi Anwar (3-17) mopped up the tail for 145.

Champagne Moment : Pete Bayless, athletic catch behind, colour challenge - Green

Dick of the Day : Phil Cook, for bowling the 12 year old first ball, full pace, causing the youngster to cry.

Fines : Ravi Anwar - 3, Mark Dibben - 8, Nigel Dibben - 9, Andy Walker - 9, Phil Cook - 9(x2), Paul Anscombe - 7, Pete Bayless - 5(0), Steve Fenner - 7, Alan Jackson (umpire) - 2, Rob Jackson - 10, Dave Guy - 7, Steve Cross - 6

Date : Sat. May 29th 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Whiteparish II Venue : Whiteparish

Whiteparish never got going and the nagging line of Will Lecomber decimated the top order finishing with 5-25.  No batsman got going and they were all out for 78.

In reply the Littleton batsmen, despite the reduced overs due to rain breaks,  had little trouble and coasted to victory with numerous overs to spare.

Date : Sat. May 22nd 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Compton & C/Ford II Venue : Compton

On a good batting track Nigel Dibben and Ravi Anwar quickly ran themselves out, but opener Andy Walker made a patient 40 as wickets fell around him, before also running himself out.  Paul Anscombe(23) and Steve Fenner(25) added the quick runs at the end giving a total of 158 which on this pitch would be difficult to defend.

In reply Compton never got started, stunted by Mark Dibben bowling 12 overs for 22 runs and Phil Cook 8 overs for 4 runs.  Nigel Dibben then came on with his gentle trundlers and took 4 wickets for 26, one an astounding catch in the deep by Andy Walker to dismiss the main striker.  Compton then seem to lose interest and played out for a drab and boring 101-7.

Champagne Moment : Andy Walker, top score and boundary catch, colour challenge - Yellow

Dick of the Day : Mark Dibben, delivery that travelled at least 4 feet down the track.

Fines : Ravi Anwar - 8, Ben Robbins - 8, Mark Dibben - 6 (x2), Nigel Dibben - 6, Andy Walker - 9 (0), Phil Cook - 10, Paul Anscombe - 10, Pete Bayless - 5, Steve Fenner - 8, Olly Spratley - 0, Alan Jackson - 1

Date : Sat. May 22nd 2004 Team : 2nd Team Opposition : Longparish II Venue : Littleton

Longparish struggled against the tidy bowling with no batsman making inroads.  Two new 'recruits' livened up the game with 'Tanks' bowling something to behold.

In reply the Littleton batsmen also struggled with only Derek Dibben making a significant contribution.  With just two wickets left, the new South African acquisition made his mark hitting the winning runs.

Date : Sat. May 15th 2004 Team : 1st Team Opposition : Dinton Venue : Littleton

Dinton batted first, with only opener Little holding the innings together with a patient 81.  The main problem for the bowlers was actually getting it straight, 34 wides, unfortunately 22 of them down to Ravi.  Mark Dibben plundered 4 wickets, but chances were few, and when they did arise, controversy stepped in. Andy Clarke took a brilliant boundary catch, but the opposition watching deemed his head had crossed the line, so a 6 was given.   Phil Cook and Paul Anscombe also took a brace of wickets each.  Chasing 188, several early demises (where was Nigel Dibben when you needed him) made the task difficult.  Rob Jackson made a patient 21 but there was light at the end of the tunnel.  Pete Bayless with 48no and Ben Robbins with a quickfire 36 gave hope, but unfortunately not enough for victory.

Champagne Moment : Ben Robbins, his first ever sixes, colour challenge - Red

Dick of the Day : None formally announced, deemed unfair on Andy Clarke for the six over the boundary event.

Fines : Dave Guy - 3, Rob Jackson, 7, Andy Walker - 6, Pete Bayless - 4, Paul Anscombe - 6, Phil Cook - 6, Ravi Anwar - 6, Andy Clarke - 6, Ben Robbins - 3(0), Colin Mansbridge - 1, Mark Dibben - 7, Nigel Dibben (awol) - 1.

Date : Sat. May 15th 2004 Team : 2nd Team  Opposition : Penton II Venue : Penton

On a damp pitch, runs were always going to be hard to come buy, but the patience of Pete 'Ernie' Arculus proved invaluable.  Blasting the ball all over the field, then watching it hold up before reaching the boundary certainly got his Ernie Wise legs motoring, and took him to a well deserved 50.  Significant 'damage' was also inflicted at the end by Nigel Pervin who in  few balls not only smashed several sixes, but with one of them the windscreen of Secretary, Alan Zanetti's car.  His wife was none too amused.

The bowling was then tight and tidy, especially 14 year old youngster Greg Sullivan, leaving Penton 43 runs short of their target.
