Carved Bench

This French Bench or Bancelle has carved openwork and parchemin end panels. It is based on an existing oak piece in the Musee des Arts decoratifs, in Paris. These long, narrow benches were usually used by a fireplace, the warmest place in a room, where you could comfortably spend a long time reading or receiving friends. You could sit facing the fire or warm your back and greet your friends.
