An ambry, aumbry or armoire were terms used for a cupboard to store things, a pantry or a storehouse. It was used mainly to store food and when it was a piece of furniture it was often beautifully carved. A design feature was made out of the need for holes for air circulation with the carving piercing right through the panels. These would be backed by fabric to keep out the flies.
