Anthony Toole.

Anthony was born and brought up in the Lake District. He was educated as a scientist and taught chemistry for 34 years.

He has walked and climbed extensively throughout Britain and Ireland. He is particularly knowledgeable about the hills of the Lake District, and has done first ascents of rock climbs on many of the crags. He has lived for many years in the north-east of England and spends a good deal of time exploring, and writing about the hills and wild places of Northumberland and Durham.

He has made two trips to the Jotunheimen mountains of Norway, and since 2000, has visited Australia three times, taking in Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and Bangkok en route. He has also been to the Italian Dolomites, the Canary Islands and Madeira. He has published articles about all of these destinations.

In recent years, Anthony has begun, somewhat belatedly, to work his way through the Scottish Munros, and has so far climbed more than 130.

Ben Nevis and the Carn More Dearg Arete

Following on from his involvement in mountaineering, he began writing for climbing and walking magazines, then branched out onto other subjects. He has published more than 300 magazine, newspaper and internet articles, the bulk being concerned with science or travel. The majority of his travel articles are concerned with mountain themes, though he has written more general travel features about the places he has visited. Wherever appropriate, he uses his scientific knowledge to enhance his articles. He also writes book reviews and has published several short stories and one novella, many with mountaineering backgrounds. In 2005 and 2006, he won Outdoor Writers’ and Photographers’ Guild Awards for Excellence in the Single Feature category. He followed this in 2007 with the OWPG/Headwater Award for Best Travel Feature.
