Tutoring can be immensely rewarding and satisfying. This page explains how it works. Don't hesitate to contact us if anything is not clear. Of course, if you have tutored before, you will know a lot of it already.
Overview:
Tutors are self-employed - you agree the lesson fee directly with the client. For each hour of tutoring which takes place, an agency fee is due to A+ Tuition. This is returned monthly to us and currently stands at £4.25 per hour.
In return, we will endeavour to provide you with suitable student contacts in your area (this will obviously depend on the demand for your subject(s)). We can also provide help and advice on the various aspects of tutoring, and can assist if you have any queries or concerns regarding the tuition process. This is especially useful for those new to tutoring.
We are intending to introduce various help sheets on such subjects as teaching dyslexic students, autistic spectrum disorders and so on. A+ Tuition students can also obtain discounts on certain revision books and practice papers - please contact us for details.
Being a smaller, local agency, we are able to offer a more personal service than the larger national agencies. Tutors and clients can contact us directly for assistance and advice as required. We have a good online presence and advertise in a variety of places both on and offline.
Starting with a new student:
A+ Tuition will contact you with details of any suitable clients (introductions will not necessarily be exclusive.) When you receive details of a prospective student, you should contact them as soon as possible to arrange lessons. You will need to agree a mutually acceptable time and the total lesson fee to be paid. This should include a sum to cover your travelling time and the agency fee.
You should let A+ Tuition know when you intend to start tuition with your new student. We will contact the parent/carer shortly after your start date with them, just to check everything is going smoothly. You are under no obligation to take on a particular student - if you cannot take on a student for whatever reason, please let us know as soon as possible.
You will be the parent/carer's first point of contact for matters relating to the tutoring. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch with A+ Tuition and we will see what we can do to help.
You should discuss the aims of the tutoring with the parent/carer and the learner, to make sure everyone is clear about what is expected. We can provide you with a copy of our "How Tutoring Works" FAQ, which you can pass on to students.

Tutor FAQs:
The following are answers to a few frequently asked questions:
Q: Who can become a tutor?
A: The main requirements for being a tutor are a thorough knowledge of your subject and patience in bucketloads! Of course, all tutors must be suitably qualified - a relevant degree and/or a teaching qualification is required. All tutors must hold or be willing to apply for an enhanced CRB check and be able to provide a suitable reference. Tutors must provide proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
Q: How do I get paid?
A: You will agree the lesson fee direct with your clients and will be responsible for collecting it from them. You may prefer to do this after each session, or you may issue monthly invoices. This is up to you. It is advisable to make sure they understand your policy on late cancellation.
Q: What are agency fees and how do I submit them?
A: The agency fees currently stand at £4.25 per hour of tutoring (reviewed periodically). You should complete a timesheet and return it to A+ Tuition within 5 days of the end of each month. You may pay by cheque or direct bank transfer. You may also submit a timesheet by email.
Q: What is my employment status with regard to tutoring?
A: You will be self-employed (even if you have a full or part-time job as well, your tutoring counts as self-employment). You will agree the lesson fee direct with your clients and will be responsible for collecting it from them. Any tutoring income (less legitimate business expenses) is subject to income tax, and you should also register with HMRC as self-employed within three months of starting (the current helpline number is 08459 154515). If you have any concerns about this, contact us.
Q: What about CRB checks?
A: If you have a recent Enhanced CRB check (less than 3 years old) you will need to send this to us. It will be sent back by return. You will not be able to start tuition until we have seen this. If you do not have one, or you are unwilling to send the original, we can arrange one at cost.
Q: What about the exam specifications?
A: All the various subject specifications and lots of past papers are available online. Your student should be able to tell you what board and syllabus they are following but if not, their school will. Most school secretaries are perfectly helpful. Respect confidentiality - you don't need to disclose the name of the student that you are tutoring. Most people tell their school that they are having help, but not everyone does.
A few other pointers:
  • Child Protection is important: for this reason, it is usually best that tuition takes place at the learner's home. For everyone's protection, you are advised to insist that a responsible adult is present. If you do choose to give tuition at your home, invite the parent/carer to stay. (Bear in mind that if you use your home for business purposes you may have to inform your insurance company. Also consider indemnity insurance in case of accidents!) Click here for our child protection policy.
  • Lesson fees are decided between you and the client. Click here for the current recommended rates. If you are not travelling far or the student is coming to you, you may wish to reduce this fee. Remember, your travelling time and the agency fee come out of the lesson fee.
  • Cancellation charges are payable - by all means be flexible, but if a student cancels less than 24 hours before a lesson it is fair to expect them to pay.
  • The tax/national insurance situation need not be onerous. Although you do have to register as self-employed within 3 months of starting, you should be able to claim Small Earnings Exemption if your annual profit from tutoring is likely to be less than about £4500. It's a simple form to complete and will exempt you from paying any extra NI. This area is entirely your responsibility - we do not get involved. There's lots of information on www.hmrc.gov.uk.
