James Caslaw 1806 - 1855 ... stub
James Caslaw, was born in Newham, Northumberland in 1806
My father always said that out family name was Casely, Casley, Caislaw, Caisley?
The next time we come across him is by his marriage, by banns, to Elizabeth Marshall of West Thirston, by Felton, at St Mary's Church in Gateshead on 12th November 1835. Witnesses were John Marshall and Jane Barclay.
His first son John was born on 13th November 1836 and baptized in St Micheal's Church, Felton on 13th November 1836.
His occupation was described as a coachman. I don’t know if he was employed privately, say at Acton Hall, or as a carrier. His appearance at Gateshead for his marriage and settling in North Shields may indicate that he knew the coaching route down the A1.
See photo of entry in Felton Church baptisms.
His second son James was born on 12th December 1838 and baptized on January 27th 1839 in Felton.
The family moved to North Shields in 1840 to Pit Row, Chirton, Tynemouth. (Census)The next time we locate James is in North Shields as a publican at the Dotwick Arms, 27, Dotwick Street, in 1840.
By 1841 he is at the Woolsington Hotel (the Woolsington House exists but it was built in 1902).
and in 1842 the address is given as Burdon Main Row, Chirton, Tynemouth.
This is followed in 1844 by the Old Percy Main, and in 1851 and 1852-1854 his address is the Hylton Castle, at 28 Dotwick Street.
A further child Elizabeth was born on 19th November 1841 and died in in 1843.
He was a witness in a trial about bribery at elections in XXX, over comments heard in the Public House – transcript attached.
His wife died in the summer of 1855 and he died later that year.
His sons dispersed:
John Caslaw stayed in North Shields and married Susannah Fothergill in St Hildas in South Shields on December 1855. They were recorded as of full age. However he was 19 and she was 16 at the time.
James left and appears in Brancepeth in County Durham under the name of James Caislaw. He married xxx and had children xxx, xxx.
