The drawing.  Do not try and copy the photo

exactly, change things as you wish, to improve

composition. As the picture is about the castle

not the footbridge, the castle has been drawn

in larger and higher than the photo suggests.

My drawing shows evidence of  lots of

reworking in order to achieve this effect.

Paint the sky. Paint the cloud shapes

with indian yellow and the

horizon. Paint cobalt blue

around the clouds.  Paint in the river as well.

Paint the back tree line with indian yellow

then while wet add yellow green, try

to suggest the roundness of the trees.

Work in a mix of hookers green, ultramarine

and payne's grey.  Mix vandyke brown and

payne's grey for the dark shadows.

Paint in the space between the trees

and the river.  Use lemon yellow

to show a far field.  The path going into

the distance is indian yellow and

yellow ochre dry brushed on. A

touch of vandyke brown on the

edge of the river.

 4

Lay down a weak wash for the stone work

(indian yellow) and the grass (lemon yellow

and yellow green).

Mix payne's grey and vandyke brown

to the stonework to build up texture.

 6

Use a stronger mix of payne's grey and

vandyke brown  to put in detail and to

emphasis the darker tones. Give the shadowed

walls a wash of ultramarine.

Paint thin wispy lines of indian yellow

in front of the cottage on the left to suggest

contours in the ground. When dry, add

a wash of yellow green and hookers green to

all the grass areas.  Add a mix of hookers

green and ultramarine to add the shadows.

Carefully, with the pen knife scrap some

paint off the stone walls to create highlights.
