TEACHING METHODS

Research has shown that passive listening and reading are two of the least efficient ways of learning and that our average attention span lasts about 20 minutes!

We attempt, therefore, to teach in an interactive way, using a variety of methods and equipment, such as role play, visualisation, small group work, quizzes and games, home study, assignments and class tests as well as lectures and practicals. Equipment includes OHP, slides, videos and powerpoint.

EQUIPMENT & CLOTHING

You should bring writing materials with you and food for lunch and there is a well equipped kitchen at the venue.

After the A & P course you will need a massage table, available at discounted prices from certain suppliers (approx cost £250-£350, depending on model chosen) and information will be given regarding this. Students are asked to bring towels and other equipment, but not massage tables, as required to practical sessions.

Fingernails should be short and clean.
Jewellery must be removed for practical sessions.
Personal grooming and hygiene should be good.
Low heeled shoes will be more comfortable.
For practical sessions clothing should allow ease of movement, be comfortable and not in garish colours (pastels/pale greys are most suitable)

TEXTBOOKS

For Anatomy & Physiology there is one set textbook, which you are advised to purchase at the weekend:

Tortora, G. J (2004) “Introduction to the Human Body” (5th Edition) Benjamin Cummings (£29)

There are two recommended texts for aromatherapy:

Tisserand & Balacs (1995) “Essential Oil Safety” Churchill Livingstone (£35)

Bowles J (2003) “The Chemistry of Aromatherapeutic Essential Oils (£15)

Other recommended reading will be given where appropriate throughout the course and all the above books are available at discount prices from the school. There is also a large selection of books and journals in the school library.

The school provides essential oils and all materials used in class in addition to couches on which to practice in class.

INSURANCE

The School is insured through Balens and the policy allows students to work on the premises and from their own homes during the course of their training. Students are recommended to join the IFPA as student members and also carry student insurance for the duration of their course. Cost per annum will be approximately £30, only required after completion of the A&P component of the course.
