Welcome ...
Welcome visitors to my
website. My name is Colin Hall and I am an exponent of
Experimental & Abstract Photography. I have been working
on my techniques for many years and am only now
confident enough in my unique styles that I feel able to
show and sell my work. Unlike many other photographers,
I only produce one print per transparency and when I
sell a print I also sell the transparency in an enclosed
package, visible but not printable again. This ensures
that when you purchase a print of mine it is unique and
original and you have the proof in your possession.
Experimental
Photography is essentially the practice of extending
ones photographic skills, beyond the basic level,
through self expression and experimentation. Most people
just want to take a balanced, colourful and sharp
picture. They are happy to use their camera's to make
records of their family milestones, holidays and
personal achievements. The experimental photographer has
developed a deeper, more intense relationship with the
medium of photography. Very much as a painter strives
for better understanding of their paint, canvas, brushes
and subject, the experimental photographer desires an
almost marital companionship of their camera's, lenses,
films and images.
To create something as
beautiful as poetry, as personal as sculpture and moving
and confrontational as dramatic dance or comedy. The
experimental photographer will dismiss all of their
previous tuition and mentally ignore any external
influences in order to produce a body of work that is
truly reflective of the photographers inner artist.
Experimental Abstract Art Theory ...
Becoming an abstract
photographer is a little strange at first. Learning to
forget everything that you have ever learned about
photographic theory and practice. Many people find it
completely impossible to grasp the idea of photographing
totally non-representational images. They have been
conditioned to believe that the photograph is a data
recorder and therefore they assume, rightly or wrongly,
that the camera is the rightful tool of the photographic
journalist, the landscape or portrait pictorialist or
just the play thing of the casual holiday maker. This,
of course, need not be the case. It only takes a little
bit of imagination to transform your camera equipment
into the tools needed to create beautiful abstract
photographs.
To think abstractly one
must first lose the urge to represent the world as
pictures. The ego should have as little to do with
abstract art creation as is humanly possible. The best
abstract art is that which is totally automatic and
removed from the trappings of existence. It is
preferable for the abstract photographer to be more a
part of the photographic process, leaving the image as
pure and un-humanised as it can be.
A great deal of
abstract imagery is created by chance. The abstract
artist creates the environment from where the image, if
conditions are favourable, will emerge and may be then
captured on film.
An abstract image is a
passionate, individual and prime evil creature, God
given and so pure that only the viewer who is able to
totally open his mind to the image can fully appreciate
its deeper qualities. ...
Non Digital Policy
...
Although I fully
appreciate the ease and convenience of modern digital
photography, I have found that I cannot work comfortably
with it. It is because of this that I have decided to
only utilise film camera's for my abstract photography.
I also only teach using film and therefore can only
accept my one to one students if they are prepared to
try and work within my film based constraints. This does
not mean that you have to rush out and buy some old
equipment if you want to come and learn some abstract
photographic techniques with me. I have a large
selection of fun and interesting camera's that you will
be welcome to use during your time with me. I hope that
you will also find the experience as worthwhile as I do.

Framed Photographs
for Sale ...
I offer my prints for
sale in a few different ways.
Firstly, like most photographers, I have a range of
images that are available as limited edition prints.
These are usually in limited edition runs of 100, 25 or
10. These images are framed simply and are ideal for
gifts or decoration items.

My second range is offered, unusually, as single print
runs. These are what I call my Classic Range. They are
images that I feel should be sold as an individual work
of art and not as a mass produced print. These single
runs are sold with the original film media, ensuring
that your image is the only true print for that
picture.
The film (either
negative or transparency) is encapsulated in a sealed
package and rendered un-usable and yet perfectly
visible. Read on ...
Obviously, as with any work of art, this can through up
some risks for the buyer, which you might feel carries
too much baggage for you. Once purchased it is the
buyers responsibility to keep the item safe and free
from deterioration as this is not replaceable should it
get damaged.

Thirdly, I offer a commission service. This
means that I work with you to create abstract
images that say something personal for you. This
could be a single image or even a series of
abstract pictures for you to theme decorate an
workplace or living environment.
As with the
Classic range of abstracts, |
you will keep the
original film media, but this time you will have the
reprint rights and copyright after the commission
process has ended.

- Updated 20th October 2008

Please
give as many details of your requirements as possible.
For instance if you would like to discuss a commission
project please give some idea of the number of images,
the environment that the pictures will be presented and
your contact details and a convenient time that you
would like to be called.
If you are based outside of the UK, please let me know
