TITLE: Aftermath of Battle for Caen (July 10th 1944)
DESCRIPTION: Picture taken on July 10th in Caen. The town, which fell to British and Canadian troops on July 9th, has been heavily mined by the Germans, and parts of it badly damaged in the battle that led to its capture. Lieutenant General Crocker, (1st Corps Commander) took the first opportunity to enter the town to study the problems of civilians who stayed in he town. Many of them had stories to tell of German destruction of buildings etc. before their retreat. Picture shows: British soldier brings a little girl through the ruins past a German defence post (picture issued July 1944).
