News from the horse’s mouth... |
|
Some of the horses from the yard are really excelling this year with Ashley. Ashley’s training routine and the yard’s care is paying dividends in the winner’s enclosure this year. With established stable stars such as Mioche D’Estruval winning two competitive Men’s Opens at Wadebridge this year with Ben Robarts on board to King’s Wood who has won three of his four starts this year with Darren Edwards and Matt Griffiths. Then there are the new recruits to the yard, such as Tonic Du Charmil who won easily on his first outing for the yard at Great Trethew earlier this season and on his second outing this season finished a gallant second to Whizzar beating the useful Rockwithacaveman in the process. Master Overseer a purchase from Doncaster last year has overwhelmed connections with his brilliant form with us. Winning impressively first time out at Wadebridge with Danny Cook then finishing third behind Southwestern and second to Kingscliff at Upcott Cross in the Four Mile Mixed Open under Darren Edward and then a week later winning another Four Mile Men’s Open at Dartmoor (again with Darren)! Hitting a Century...One of the stable jockeys has reached a racing milestone this year. Darren Edwards who has ridden for our stable since Ashley retired from race-riding in 2004 has now ridden over one hundred point-to-point winners in his career. This landmark was reached at Dartmoor Foxhound’s Point to Point at Fleet on the 17th April. He then followed his 100th win with another on board of Master Overseer! So congratulations to Darren and we hope the winners keep coming! First steps…Last summer Laura and Ashley flew over to Ireland to the Goffs Sales to ‘just look’ at a few young horses! Well inevitably, when faced with the top young horses from Ireland, they returned after successfully purchasing a three year old gelding by Beneficial When he arrived here we started to break him straight away so that he could then enjoy a good summer out at grass. Ben came into training in the autumn and has not failed to impress Ashley and the team here at Coldharbour. Laura Claydon’s four year old, King’s Bench had his first race at Cothlestone in the two and half mile Maiden Race. He was given a brilliant ride by Will Biddick and finished third beaten only three lengths. Owner, trainer and jockey were thrilled with the horse’s performance and he is one worth noting for next season! Winning connections…Caroline has been rushing around this season between Coldharbour and her parent’s farm near Crediton riding out early in the morning with her mother, Sarah before going onto her day-job in Exeter for the Regional Development Agency! The past year has been a battle for both Henry and Sarah, as Henry has been battling Cancer. Whilst Henry was in hospital Caroline mentioned that she may have found a ‘lovely horse’ for him and that it would be a real tonic for him during his recovery. David Pipe had mentioned that he was looking for a good home for one of his horses and we agreed there and then that we would purchase the horse and he would have a home for life! This horse was Bannowstrand and he is the family’s pride and joy. All the family, have been involved in this horse’s preparation for the season, Angela rides him out and turns him out for his race days. Caroline qualified him and rides him out at Creedy and Sarah also take a share of the riding out duties on Bannow. Even Ashley has been involved in both schooling him and galloping him! Bannow winning the Eggesford Member’s Race under Darren Edwards will be one of those treasured memories for the family and Caroline’s parents are indebted to David Pipe and David Johnson for selling the horse to them. The race would have been even better if Caroline had stayed onboard Vivid to finish placed in the race!! Stronger glue needed for Caroline! |
