A country-house murder mystery set in secluded rural Somerset at the home of Fergus O'Brien, a legendary First World War airman. Fergus has received a series of typewritten death threats but has no idea who is out to get him. He has enlisted the help of Sir John Strangeways, Assistant Commissioner at New Scotland Yard and intends to invite a group of guests to a house-party over Christmas, including Sir Johns's nephew, Nigel. There are certainly plenty of potential suspects . It could be Lucilla Thrale, O'Brien's discarded mistress; prim Edward Cavendish; the African explorer Georgia Cavendish; the academic Philip Starling; or Knott-Sloman who had made a large amount of money during the war. A devious series of events unfold along with possible motives for mischief at the snow-bound country house. When a crime is committed, Superintendent Bleakley opts for the obvious solution, but Nigel persuades him otherwise.
