The story

Gervase Fen has been commissioned to advise on a new film on the life of the poet, Alexander Pope. On visiting the film studios he meets up with his old police friend, Inspector Humbleby, who is looking into the particulars of a recent suicide of one of the actresses in the film. Why would the young, beautiful and ambitious Gloria Scott want to end it all, seemingly on the spur of the moment after a party? She had a fling with fellow actor Stuart North but our attention focuses on the Crane family whose interests permeate everything that happens at the studio. One suicide soon leads to other suspicious death and the threat of mischief. Gervase is convinced that many of the leading players are in danger and does his best to both protect the innocent whilst trying to figure out what is going to happen next. His restlessness leads him to decide to drive over to the Crane's house just to make sure their dinner guest had arrived and he ends up, literally, trying to find his way out of a maze.
