AAA Points and Events

Events which qualify for the AAA

Any calendar or permanent event that is hilly enough can be included in the AAA. Hilliness is measured by the rate of climb. The table on the left below shows the minimum rate of climb required to score AAA points. The table on the right shows the equivalent minimum amount of climbing. Some intermediate distances have been included in the second table.

Distances refer to the distance of an event or event section. If an entire event is not hilly enough to qualify for inclusion in the AAA, then a continuous section of 100km or more within the event may well be hilly enough and can be included. Events shorter than 100km qualify if they are hilly enough, but not sections shorter than 100km.

Events with AAA points may be designated Grimpeurs. Events offering AAA Gold Grimpeur medals may be designated Super Grimpeurs (see separate page for details of Grimpeur Medals).

The AAA Points Formula

Before 2009, AAA points were based on the rate of climb and the distance of an event. From the start of 2009 a new AAA points scheme was introduced.

Provided it is hilly enough to qualify for the AAA as described above, an event now scores an AAA point for every thousand metres of climbing, rounded to the nearest quarter point, and regardless of distance. So an event that does 2,180m of climbing is worth 2.25 AAA points. Where only a section of an event qualifies for AAA, then only the climbing in that section scores AAA points.

How to get AAA points added to events

Work out the climbing using one of the methods described on the page "Working Out Climbing".

Check the event is hilly enough to qualify for the AAA. If not the whole event, then maybe a section of 100km or longer.

Convert the amount of climbing to AAA points.

Review climbing and points with the AAA Man. Contact him while the event is still in the planning and preparation stages and before it is finalised in the calendar and made public, and preferably after the distance has been validated. The purpose is to review the method of working out climbing, and agree the AAA climbing figure and AAA points before they are published.

Note that AAA events may need to have extra controls (info or otherwise) added to confirm that hilly sections have been completed.

Update the calendar. The AAA Man adds climbing and AAA points to the calendar if they are not already there, and also AAA climbing if it is different from the total climbing.

Changes to AAA Events

If there is a change to an event, e.g. a revised route, a re-assessment of climbing, availability of a GPS tracklog, etc., the organiser contacts the AAA Man in the same way to confirm the new AAA climbing figure and AAA points.
