Acupuncture

What is it?

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into the skin.  Specific points are chosen that lay on channels or meridians that run along the surface of the body and limbs.  Their insertion encourages the smooth flow of Qi and enables the body to rebalance itself.

Clinical studies suggest that Acupuncture is effective for nausea, low back pain, vomiting, dental pain, and migraine (British Medical Association).  These are but a few examples of what Acupuncture can treat.

What to expect on your first visit

During the first consultation a full medical history is taken; any specific health concerns are discussed and, finally the pulse and tongue are examined. A diagnosis is made and an individually tailored treatment plan is designed.

Needles are inserted and retained for 20mins.  Moxibustion (burning of the herb, Artemisia) or cupping (a glass vacuum) may be applied simultaneously, depending on the particular diagnosis.

Does it hurt?

Very fine needles are used, not like those used for injections.  Each of us responds differently to treatment.  Some experience a tingling or heavy feeling, some a short pricking sensation like that of elastic.  A deep sense of relaxation or pain relief is often felt.

Is it safe?

Single-use, sterile, disposable needles are used at Badao. Serious side-effects are very rare – less than one per 10,000 treatments.
