Match Report.
The seasons final league was of little importance for both sides, Barley had already secured second spot and Coven would end up with a mid-table finish whatever the result. Both sides were short of players for this May Bank Holiday weekend fixture and Coven took the field with just nine men. Barley as you would expect took control of the match, keeping possession well but Coven got everyone back behind the ball and tried to attack on the break when possible. Barley had one eye on next weeks Brandrick Cup quarter final and where over confident and complacent both at the same time and just ten minutes in were hit with a real sucker punch. The Coven striker latching onto a ball into the box and bundled the ball over line and keeper Pickett out the way in controversial style 0-1. Barley were then hit with another blow ten minutes before the break, Pickett came out midway into the Barley half to clear a routine ball but sliced the kick putting through the Coven striker to net there second and put Coven 0-2 at Half Time. The second half was much the same as the first, Barley controlling the play but now time was taking toll on Coven's nine men. Evans was first on the Barley score sheet four minutes after the restart, some excellent skill down the left from Hale and a cross that found Evans at the far post who had time to control and thrash the ball home from close range 1-2. Richard Porter tied the score in the 57th minute, looping the ball over head of the Coven defender and shooting low on the volley (in true Gascoigne vs Scotland (Euro 96) fashion) past a helpless keeper 2-2. Barley pushed on but many Coven injuries slowed the game and Barley's momentum. Hennessey almost gave Barley the lead but his effort was cleared off the line via a Coven defender and the crossbar but was Hale who found the net on 78minutes from close range for Barley's third after a good ball in from the right hand side. Hickman nearly extended Barley's lead with a left foot screamer just wide of the left hand post just a few minutes before he was substituted for Player / Manager Cornaby to make his only outfield appearance of the season. Cartwtright wrapped up the victory four minutes from time after his crossed ball from the left was deflected in off a Coven defender. 4-2 the final score line.
