Match Report
Barley and Lion both went into this evenings fixture looking for victory to ensure a place the Brandrick Cup Quarter Finals. It was a nasty day, the rain hadn't stopped all day and showed no signs of easing during the course of the match. The game kicked off and instantly Lion showed signs of desperation in cup success pushing Barley hard. Barley soon upset the applecart though, a Barley corner was only partially cleared before Bradnick crossed back into the box from deep, a ball that evaded everyone and should been dealt with easily by the keeper, however he could only spill the ball in to the path of captain Sewell who hammered the ball home from five yards with his left peg 0-1. Barley gave Lion another fright shortly after the goal, Cartwright working down the left to cross for Shaun Porter who headed just wide, it was Barley's only other real chance of a tough first half. Lion threw everything forward for the remainder of the half as if the final whistle was just moments away, but Barley were too strong, the back-line stood firm and limited Lion to just one clear-cut chance which Pickett saved well and a handful of hopeful chances. Half Time 0-1. The second half was very much the same as first, Lion continued to attack in desperation for a goal but if was Barley who netted again just past the hour mark. Cartwright using his pace down the left on the break to run from the half way line, beat the right back and tuck the ball neatly away into the far bottom corner. Lion showed good spirit and with the game seemingly beyond them they kept pushing and eventually striker Lee Harthill, a former Barley Mow trialist pulled one back with twenty minutes to go 1-2. The goal spelled hope for Lion who started pushed harder than ever but as they pushed Barley looked more and more likely to score on the counter, Cartwright, Hickman and substitutes, Blakeway, Hale and Richard Porter all failing to take opportunities to finish the game off, but 1-2 was enough and Barley progress to the Quarter Finals.
