Match Report
The day started with much promise, Barley looking for victory which would as good as seen them qualify for the Clinton Cup semi-finals. The match kicked off and within 2minutes Barley had took the lead. Cartwright swung a ball across the pitch which was struck on the half volley with the outside of Hill's boot and it flew straight into the top corner. From then on though it was Wales who dominated the match with Barley looking dangerous on the break. Barley survived there first real scare on 9minutes, keeper Pickett was pulled wide by the Wales striker who crossed the ball in front of the empty net but the Wales attempt was blocked on the line. More pressure was dealt with by Barley and then on 19minutes there nearly made it 0-2 a 30yard piledriver from Wollaston hit the underside of the crossbar and rebounded out back into play. 4minutes later and Wales broke free of the Barley back line and a strike from the edge of the eighteen yard box produced a wonderful save down to Pickett's left. Wales played the game in true Blackburn Rovers style with plenty of late and dangerous challenges but the referee seemed reluctant to open his notebook, a foul just before the half hour awarded Barley a freekick 30yards from goal. Hickman stepped up and blasted his shot high and wide, something Gabor Gyepes would have been proud of. Despite the pressure Barley looked as if they would hold out the 0-1 till half time until on 37minutes a routine ball wipped into the box was missed by Pickett and a simple tap in gave Wales the equalizer they deserved. Barley almost restored there lead, a good ball down the left from Westbury put Richard Porter away but his effort was smashed point blank at the Wales keeper. Just 2minutes later Wales took the lead, the Barley back line beaten on the offside trap and the Wales forward took the ball into the box and slotted home with ease to give them the advantage at the break. The second half saw neither side look dangerous football wise although Wales dominated the play. Wales however looked dangerous in a physical sence as more late and dangerous tackles saw referee Hackett produce the yellow card on three occasions. Wales killed the game off just after the hour when another routine cross was'nt dealt with by Barley keeper Pickett, his dropped catch saw another ease tap in for Wales to take a 3-1 lead. Pickett however restored some pride when Cornaby brought down the Wales forward in the last minute and Pickett saved the subseqent penalty. The loss and other results in the competition leaves Barley needing at least a six goal victory against Wombourne Wanderers make them the best second placed side and a place in the semi's.
