Match Report

Barley kicked off there Brandrick Cup campaign at home to Wolverhampton Sunday league side Sedgley Conservatives. The match was scheduled for an early 11am kick-off and was literally a wake-up call for some of the Barley players. Two minutes into the game a corner from the right was met with a bullet header leaving Barley's third choice stopper Sewell with no chance. Sedgley settled too early though and allowed Barley to put on some pressure. 11minutes in and an elegant chip from Cartwright put Barley on level terms. The football was played in good spirit and and both teams passed the ball well, Sedgley looking the more likely to score, but it was Barley who went in 2-1 up at the break. Shaun Porter played an excellent ball over the top of the defence and brother Richard Porter latched on just beating the keeper to the ball and looping it into the net. Sedgley came out in the second half determined to get back into the game as they attacked heavily. Barley were resilient in defence and battled hard and if that wasn't enough Barley's counter attacking play was indeed something to be frightened of. Barley's third goal proved the point in the 70th minute. Another counter attack with excellent midfield play lead to Evans being teed-up for a thunderous volley into the near post. Cartwright finished off the rout where he started 7minutes from time. Another break put Cartwright through the middle and his pace was enough to give him time to slot the ball away with his left peg. All round a damn fine performance.
