Match Report
Barley started the afternoon looking for a bit of cup fortune following there poor start to the season. Premiership new boys Sedgley Seven Stars visited the Dormston looking for there first win of the season, the Stars currently propping up the premier table. The game started with both teams looking to get forward but wasting possession. 10mins in a ball over the top but Sedgley in, reserve keeper Cornaby parried the ball over the oncoming forward and was then clattered to the floor but no freekick was awarded and Smith was then adjudged to have handled to ball in an attempt to clear and the referee awarded a most dubious penalty. Up stepped the Stars left back who converted the kick with accuracy. Barley pushed on in attempt to pull themselves back into the game but were unable to find the killer ball. Stars came close to doubling there lead, a failed clearance from a corner kick was almost stabbed home from five yards but Cornaby saved well down to his left. 26minutes in Stars did have the ball in the net only for it to be ruled out for foul on the keeper. 5minutes later Barley produced there best chance of the game, a surging run from Cartwright and a low shot was saved well by a confident looking Stars keeper. 36minutes a Stars finally got there second. A well placed through ball put the Stars in and a low shot beat Cornaby despite getting a hand to the effort. Then just 2minutes before the break Sedgley wrapped up the game, a freekick from the right was met by a powerful header on the edge of the eighteen yard box and found the top corner leaving Barley going in 0-3 down at half time. Barley started the second better and pushed forward looking for that illusive goal but had many a failed attack and could not find that final ball. 21minutes into the half Star made it 0-4 when a cross fom the right looped over keeper Cornaby and hit the far post before finding the net. Barley managed a consolation when substitute R Porter shot was well saved by the Stars keeper and fellow substitute Freeman tapped in the rebound. As soon as the game restarted Stars restored the lead, a ball though the defence was latched onto and onrushing keeper Cornaby was beaten too the ball and it was knocked over his head and into the net. 10minutes from time Stars wrapped it up, no closing down around the edge of the box and a low shot into the corner of the net meant no more Lester Cup football for the Barley this season.
