Match Report

Barley broke the pre-season curse in there final warm up game against new Beacon League Division One side Sedgley Town Reserves. The game started with Barley taking an early command, with some neat passing, just 7minutes in Cartwright was nudged in the back and won his second penalty in the pre-season programme. It was surprisingly centre back Michael Cornaby who stepped up to take the spot kick but blazed it straight over the bar, showing why he has never scored in three seasons with the club. Sedgley only seemed to be a threat off set pieces with some high balls into the box but were unable to register a single chance on target. After half an hour Barley managed to break the deadlock with a ball over the top of the Sedgley back line and Richard Porter lobbing the keeper to net his third goal of pre-season. Moments later some good work down the left put Cartwright away and his low cross was missed by Shaun Porter and the Sedgley defenders only to give Hale a tap in at the far post, 2-0. Sedgley did muster up a goal to give them hope before half time when there No.12, a substitute striker won a tackle with keeper Pickett leaving a empty net to finish into. The second half was all down hill for the first division outfit and Barley romped into a 6-1 lead in the first 20minutes of the half. A stunning 30yarder from Marson, a neat finish from Shaun Porter, a low headed goal from Cartwright from captain Sewell's pass and an excellent run from Mason rounding the keeper and squeezing home the ball from a tight ankle to notch up the lead. Barley at this point relaxed a little but neither side took any real control for the remainder of the game. Sedgley did get a second goal but it proved only to be a consolation. To sum up, a superb performance giving manger Cornaby a nice selection headache going into the first league game of the new season.
